Some sweetness is immediately apparent in the fruit, which seems to be a juicy blend of cherry, berry and hints of prune. Forward and open, this offers single-vineyard fruit flavor at a budget wine price. Nice winemaking; not for the cellar, but a lovely bottle to drink right now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s real concentration evident in this modestly priced Cabernet from Balboa. It’s got density and grip—the Cabernet fruit is sappy and solid, with plenty of cassis and black cherry flavor, substantial tannins, and a lick of licorice. This feels and tastes like a pricier bottle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the second vintage for this Bordeaux blend, the winery’s reserve. The simple white label, with Mith in black letters and a black rose in silhouette, belies the quality within. Rather than go for the smooth ride, this wine seeks out the flavor hills on its way to a lightly buttery finish. Elegant and interesting, with clean, Cab-dominated red fruit flavors.

Balboa Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An aromatic, pretty nose softens up the entry and leads into a tasty, cranberry-flavored red wine. The addition of a small amount of Malbec stiffens up the tannins a bit and thickens up the back end. It gives the wine a bit more substantial weight than its siblings.

Balboa’s Thomas Glase, who also makes the wines for Beresan, offers up a very fine Merlot for the price. It’s firm and tangy with strawberry and raspberry flavors; balanced with refreshing acids. There’s nothing big or heavy here; just an easy-drinking young wine, fresh and flavorful, with a nice spicy kick at the end.

Balboa’s affordably-priced Syrah brings out flavors of cranberry and raspberry fruit. Clean and tart, these crisp red fruits hit the palate with a sharp snap and finish with a spicy tang. Tasty stuff.

Balboa Syrah - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This nicely captures the complexity and earthiness of Washington Syrah, without becoming too heavy. Raspberry fruit is backed by earthy flavors and peppery herb, nicely integrated with nothing obtrusive. This is not the sweet and jammy style of Syrah you find in California, but it has a lot to offer if you give it a good look.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tangy berry/black cherry fruit is backed with lots of acid and hints of earthy funk. It’s not vegetal but it is definitely herbal, a complex and flavorful reserve that falls right between Balboa’s regular Syrah and the Sayulita.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth, roasted flavors suggest a richer wine than might be expected at the price. The light cherry fruit is wrapped in smoked meat, tar and tannin. A very tasty effort, from the winemaker for Beresan.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Supple and balanced, this 100% Merlot brings ripe berries and cherries matched to moderate acids and silky tannins. It’s a ready-to-go, pleasant-drinking young wine, with a whiff of Earl Grey tea and light loam in the tannins.
