A bright, almost carbonic-maceration style, with crisp cherry fruit accented by a touch of almond skin. Try serving this in place of Beaujolais for a tart, refreshing summertime changeup.

From the local co-op, the Cave de Vignerons de Beaumes-de-Venise, this is a soft, very ripe wine filled with flavors of licorice and prune, but without any sense of heaviness. Easy to drink.

My favorite of the current crop from this reliable co-op, the 2005 Terres de Bel Air boasts richer fruit than the other cuvées. Mixed cherry and plum flavors are bolstered by a firm structure and decent concentration. Picks up a charming hint of pepper on the finish. Drink now.

This attempt at a more serious, ageworthy Beaumes-de-Venise rouge has resulted in a wine that’s a bit hard and unyielding, with firm tannins that seem out of character for the appellation. Try after 2008, but it’s a gamble.

Plummy and chocolaty on the nose, yet this modest rosé thins out on the palate, offering rather dilute flavors.

From Les Vignerons de Beaumes de Venise, this is a cheery, light-bodied Côtes-du-Rhône. Pretty cherry flavors lack much substance but do quench a thirst. Try serving it chilled with light meals, like you might a simple Beaujolais.
