Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A nose of nutmeg, clove and cranberry gives this uncomplicated Merlot some character. On the palate, it’s extremely tart and soft with sour cherry and spicy oak flavors, but in a lightweight, unassertive way.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells like beef bouillon and some mushroom, and tastes of plums and berries coated in an oaky veneer. A darkly flavored wine, but a hollow one. Imported by Pacific Wine Partners.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of 75% Semillon and 25% Chardonnay boasts rather subdued flavors, but works in just enough ripe pear and melon flavors to satisfy. It’s medium-bodied, with hints of dried spices for complexity and a mouthwatering finish. It’s a great value at this rock-bottom price.

Light in weight, what impresses about this wine is that it doesn't try too hard. The cherry-berry fruit is modest, there are some herbal overtones and peppery accents, but it's crisp and clean; an easy quaff for a busy weeknight.

Banrock Station’s 2006 Shiraz is a throwback to the kind of super value Australian wines used to provide with more regularity. For $5, consumers get a decently textured, supple wine with plenty of forward blueberry and plum fruit and touches of chocolate and pepper. Look for it by the glass or buy it by the case for entertaining on a budget.

Blackberry and creamy vanilla aromas with cinnamon accents mark the nose of this very pleasant red. Displays good depth of fruit, licorice notes and well-integrated oak on the supple palate. Decent acidity keeps it from being cloying, and the wine finishes with good length. Best Buy.

A fun, affordable pink wine. Dry cherry and toast aromas stat things off; it's soft-bodied and tropical-flavored on the palate, with floral accents. Finishes dry. 18,000 cases produced.

Just what you want in a chilled, porch-sippin’, beach-lyin’ wine. It’s a straightforward, uncomplicated Chard, but one with fleshy white peach and Granny Smith apple flavors. Aromas are on the sweet side, though, with pineapple syrup and flowers taking the lead.

Peach fuzz is this Chard's main flavor, with grass and cream accents on the nose. Acids are a little tart. A simple, everyday white.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though the alcohol pokes out a bit in this wine, it’s still a good, value-priced sipper. On the palate, it’s all about chewy plum and blackberry fruit. The nose offers black pepper, chocolate and coconut aromas. Imported by Pacific Wine Partners.
