Straight-ahead, no frills Merlot, with plenty of up-front strawberry/cherry lifesaver fruit flavors. There are some stiff, slightly weedy tannins as well, and the finish is quite astringent. This Pomerol wannabe would taste best with a nice cut of beef.

Rich and satisfying in all respects. It offers full, fat fruit flavor, a generous complement of new oak, and a juicy, oily, mouthcoating grip. Finishes with a pleasing burst of roasted nuts.

Minty-menthol, cedar and mixed-berry flavors preface a palate where bright berries and heavy oak flavors compete for top billing. Medium-weight and tannic in the mouth, this Syrah finishes with lots of dry tannins, and bitter-coffe and steeped-tea flavors.

This is a lovely bottle, with clean, crisp fruit providing the backbone. Complex flavors of melon, fig and sweetpea, just the right hint of grassiness, and some good, toasty vanilla make for a full-flavored, satisfying bottle.

A budget-priced Cabernet with a sweet nose that includes a distinctive mix of talcum powder, toast and cinnamon spice. The wine is simple, tart and spicy, and the finish rather chalky and tannic.

Here is a well-priced Chardonnay that delivers a bit extra. Plump, soft fruit with a hint of honey and plenty of butterscotch. There’s even a hint of licorice. All in all, a well-rounded, forward, fruity effort with front-loaded flavors.

This could be called the signature white for Barnard Griffin, for it always delivers astonishing flavor for the modest price. A small percentage of Sémillon is in the blend, but the sappy, spicy, penetrating herbaceousness of Sauvignon Blanc is showcased, not disguised. Done in a Sancerre-like style, under 13% alcohol, this is a gorgeous food wine, but you may just want to sip on it all by itself.

A good one, with flavors of grape and plum up front, good acid and restrained (13.1`% alcohol). Well-constructed, though not deep or complex; it’s ready right now.
