Smoky, charry notes kick off here, backed by hints of black cherry, plum, raspberry and herbs. The wine is relatively smooth on the palate, with a toasty licorice note at the end.

Direct and fruity, this is a bit simple but ultimately satisfying wine that would be at home with burgers or other uncomplicated fare. Black cherry and blackberry flavors pick up just a hint of pepper on the finish. Kosher.

If you judge it just by the aroma you may take a pass. Strong gooseberry and sulfur smells are hardly welcoming. It’s sweet, like applesauce, with touches of grapefruit to offer some balance. Like the wine above, it contains some Colombard concentrate.

Good dark color. Has a youthful Cabernet aroma that’s grapey and curranty. Some richness and concentration in the mouth, with currant, berry and anise flavors. A little rough around the edges, but a very decent price.

A curious Chardonnay. Has modest aromas of apple, citrus and spice, but seems disjointed in its flavors, which veer from fruity and spicy to rubbery and medicinal. Not the best effort from this kosher winery.

Smells a little hot and rubbery, with stewed-prune, tomato, spice and earth notes. Smooth and ripe, with plenty of nice fruit. A rough, rustic character comes through on the finish.

Slightly sweet, this easy-drinking sipper will go best with fusion foods or fresh fruit. Wildflower, honey and smoky vanilla aromas lead to intensely fruity flavors, with soft acids.

Fruity and intense in blackberries, black cherries, leather, sweet cocoa and peppery spices, and totally dry, this is a mouth-filling Zin. It’s soft and gentle, with a finish that’s just slightly sweet.

This wine, from a leading kosher winery, is rich in apricot, peach, lime, kiwi and nectarine fruit, and is without the wax-bean quality that can plague wines made from this variety. This version is not quite dry yet not quite sweet, and pairs perfectly with a salad of mixed greens, blue cheese and ripe pears.

This wine shows real varietal character, in the Northern Rhône sense of a fairly tannic, dry offering, but also is true Edna Valley in the brisk acids and purity of fruit. Has that hard-to-describe quality of elegant complexity that is the first duty of wine. Drink now through 2010.
