Here is 100% Sangiovese that reaches unbelievable extraction and thickness. The results are meaty and chewy with thick aromatic layers of plump cherries, chocolate, tobacco, moist earth and oaky spice. The mouthfeel is lively and vibrant with lingering tones of barbecue on the finish.

Initially, this light-framed Chianti seems scattered and unrefined. With time in the glass it yields fresh red fruit. A slightly woody and tannic finish is borderline astringent. It needs some basic food to carry it, i.e. pizza or spaghetti.

This beautifully extracted wine has aged for 18 months in oak to obtain the level of opulence and sophistication it boasts now. It feels smooth and velvety on the tongue and carries long-lasting flavors of blackberry, allspice, leather, white pepper and coffee.

Straight from the sawmill, this is one heavily oaked Chianti. The nose oozes espresso, burnt toast, marinade and more. But do the depth of fruit and the level of flavor deserve such wood? We liked the size, texture and pillowy tannins, but in giving this positive rating we still question the fruit at the foundation. You be the judge.

This wonderful ruby-colored Riserva delivers notes of ripe cherry, milk chocolate, herbs and pipe tobacco. It has loads of zest and pizzazz, with lingering spice tones, solid structure and silky tannins. It presents a complete and very pretty package.

Campo Ceni is a New World expression of Sangiovese (that sees 6 months in oak) with deep layers of blackberry, spice, leather and tobacco. The mouthfeel is supple and smooth and this wine is an absolute pleasure to drink.

This is a gorgeous Vin Santo with richly caramelized flavors and extraordinary smoothness, opulence and persistency. Its modern and round—there are no sharp points here—and absent are those resin or tar-like flavors you sometimes find. Instead this is an absolutely pure expression of caramel delight.

Barone Ricasoli delivers a top-class Chianti Classico that is penetrating, proud and modern at the same time. The wine is creamy and dense in the mouth with satisfying flavors of blackberry, cured meat and exotic spice. Very nice.

Smooth and luscious, with a fragrant nose of bold red fruit, polished oak and earth. The palate comes together with rich cherry and berry fruit, toast, coffee and tannin. The finish is rich, smoky and long, with a delightful texture. Quite the showpiece wine, courtesy of extra-ripe fruit and 18 months in oak.

Intensely aromatic full of earth, leather and rhubarb. The palate seems to want to offer more, but it’s missing some charm and depth. Despite that, there’s length to the finish and complexity to the red-fruit palate. —M.S.
