The top-of-the-line from BRL Hardy, and it shows. Masculine aromas of smoked meat, sweaty leather, and earth give it a Rhônish character, but they’re backed up by plump, juicy blackberries. Needs a couple of years to blossom, but the quality is evident.

The famous E&E Shiraz also comes in a sparkling version. There’s no denying the quality of the 2001, which boasts bold aromas of toast, cedar, vanilla and blackberries. The mouthfeel is full, creamy and lush, and while it finishes a touch sweet, there’s just enough tannin and acid to keep it balanced. Delicious now, but these wines can age 10 or more years from the vintage.

With such rich blackberry and clove aromas, the wine’s powerful berry and plum flavors should come as no surprise. There’s spice on the palate, too, which is medium-sized, elegant—and maybe even a little lighter than you’d expect.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A distinctive wine—one that bears strong resemblance to the blockbuster ’98, without quite as much extraction and finesse. Flavors run the gamut from ripe red fruit to caramel to foresty earthiness; still, the wine is more about mouthfeel than flavor. Lush, medium-full, with smooth tannins, this is one to drink fireside—in, say, 2006. —D.M.

Aromas are a curious mix of hickory smoke, flowers and pickle barrel. This Shiraz's mouthfeel is soft and dry, with flavors of red plum, earth and oak. A good wine, at a good price.

Chalky tannins dress up pretty basic cherry and plum flavors. This isn’t a fat wine; on the contrary, the fruit’s taut rather than fleshy. Nose is an interesting mélange of eucalyptus, barbecue and anise.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This isn’t a wine to be held until the next century, but it’s such a ringer that you probably wouldn’t be able to save it that long, anyway. You’ll recognize in Barossa Valley Estate’s second wine E&E’s trademark caramel, mocha and plum flavors. It’s medium-bodied though muscly, with an alluring bouquet of jammy blackberry, chocolate and soil. Yum. —D.M.

Now showing unusual aromas of eucalyptus, roasted fruit and pickle barrel. It’s supple in the mouth, with over-the-top stone fruit flavors and fresh herb accents. Finishes on a bitter-chocolate note. Drinking well now.

Fir tree, orange liqueur and meaty aromas; the palate offers a veneer of vanilla enveloping raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors. Not as lush as some of the older wines; feels crisp and lively in the mouth. Cranberry flavors punctuate a crisp finish.
