Basedow’s 1998 offering is black—no, blacker than black: Dark berry fruit, smoke, toasty oak and black coffee aromas lead into similarly dark black cherry, black pepper and oak flavors. Ends a little hot, with licorice, cedar and pepper notes.

Big, nutty aromas and thick, heavy smoke let you know right away what to expect. Rich and weighty in the mouth, but the fruit is subdued and disappears quickly on the finish.

The overall impression here is candied—from molasses aromas to confected grape flavors, to a finish that pops with bright fruit, but leaves a gelatinous, manufactured fruit flavor in the throat. Saving graces here are a smooth mouthfeel, and dark earth flavors that partially mask the other flavors.
