Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Meaty and dense, but like many of the ’02s, it’s not what you’d call rich. Plenty of plum, cherry, chocolate and espresso run through the wine, while the finish is clean and features perfectly ripe flavors. Round, tasty and firm, like a Dolcetto should be.

Basic and meaty, but pretty nice once you delve into this dense, well-oaked wine that runs fast with snappy, cheerful red fruit. Cherry and cassis are the main players, with chocolate making a cameo appearance. Not complex, but tasty and flavorful.

Plum and cherry aromas with a touch of leather. Quite snappy in the mouth, with cherry flavors and accents of black coffee. A smooth, expansive finish with firm tannins and ample fruit make it more solid than many.

Everything is harmonious about this wine, from the aromas of cedar and cherries to the flavors of ripe fruit and vanilla. The mouthfeel is supple and round, making for an exceptionally easy-to-drink Barbaresco. Drink now–2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tarry, with plum and black cherry notes that combine with dusty flavors to give a lasting impression of dark earth. It seems plump and round on first impression, then the tannins clamp down on the finish, ending with slightly bitter black tea leaves.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Clean on the nose, with aromas of pear and nectarine. Turns racy and fruity the minute it hits your tongue; pink grapefruit and tangerine flavors prevail. Snappy and tight on the tail end, with a high-voltage, piquant mouthfeel.

Batasiolo Cortese - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like the other Batasiolo Barolos we tasted, the tannins in this wine are soft, making it approachable within the next few years. Leather and red earth notes are layered over a base of red plums, finishing with a touch of anise.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The ample tannins of this wine are deceptively soft—but don’t let that fool you. This one should age gracefully through 2015. For now, it’s dominated by earth, tar and tobacco, but shows glimpses of plum, particularly on the finish. Aged in barrique, but not particularly oaky. Cellar Selection.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This soft, easy-drinking Barolo is already approachable. Delicate aromas of roses, leather and anise draw you in; cherry and earth flavors fill your mouth, before a chocolate note emerges on the finish. Good restaurant choice, where more tannic examples are often served too young.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This late-harvest Muscat is made much like a Sauternes, using botrytized grapes and small oak barrels. Honeyed apricot and orange flavors are not overly sweet, while a toasted grain note on the finish suggests pairing with seared foie gras or grilled fruit.
