Beaulieu is most known for its Private Reserve Cab, but in a way, the Rutherford Cab shows what the winery can do on an everyday basis. It’s always balanced and controlled, elegant and dry. This vintage shows all those qualities, with ripe black currant fruit. Drink now through 2008.

For 100 years, Beaulieu’s Rutherford Cabernets have been supple wines of balance and charm rather than overwhelming power. They still stubbornly are. This is classic midvalley Cabernet, with currant flavors, dusty tannins, moderate alcohol and modest oak. It will age for many years.

This ripe, fruity blended Cab is bursting with cassis, mocha and smoky oak flavors. The tannins are very smooth and ripe. A minor quibble is the alcoholic heat throughout.

I like this wine for its voluptuousness, its creamy mouthfeel, and the long, pure flavors of cherries, chocolate and coffee. It’s dry, elegant and completely balanced, the kind of Merlot people have in mind when they talk about “the soft Cabernet.”

A good, everyday Syrah that shows a classy balance, with quite the depth of Beaulieu’s more expensive reds. The blackberry and spice flavors have a pleasant edge of wintergreen mint.

Many Napa Zins have a Cabernet-like quality, but this one stays true to Zin’s wild and woolly character. It’s briary, a little green and peppery alongside the riper berry flavors, and very dry, with mouthwatering acidity and brisk tannins.

Another lovely, expressive Carneros Chardonnay from Beaulieu. They’ve actually lowered the price over the years, which makes this rich wine a value. Dry, crisp and creamy, it offers flavors of pineapples, pears, honeysuckle flower, vanilla and cinnamon spice, with a minerally grounding.

A large-scale wine at a modest price, this Pinot is well-structured and cellar worthy. There’s very nice cherry fruit with earthy accents and lots of oak. Feels round and fairly full in the mouth. The tannins on the back end show its ageworthy quality, but it is already smooth.

Dark and deep, with dense fruit and earthy, meaty notes around the black-fruit core. Excellent mouthfeel, big, fat and delicious, with a long and complex cherry, earth and mineral finish. A satisfying, well-structured keeper.
