Wonderful nose of black cherries and blackberries with a hint of blueberry and plum notes, minerals and earth, smoke, ripe aromas with a rich texture; sweet and smooth at first, but then the wine succumbs to the failing of the ’97 vintage and becomes quite hard and unyielding; the ‘97s seem to have a shell around them that keeps the fruit subdued and supplants instead flavors of wood and metal with a dry tannic texture; not really unpleasant, but not the fullness of a better vintage. As is usually the case, this wine is denser and riper than most of the other wines in its vintage; deep color and ripe, rich nose with hints of butterscotch and caramel, minerals and herbs mix with lemony aromas; ripe and sweet with plenty of fruit; not particularly elegant, but substantial; solid finish of lemons with a hint of earth. Sweet, rich and ripe nose typical of this appellation, honeyed but also with a pronounced mineral underpinning, sweet lemons, almonds; a bit thick; powerful in the mouth with a shot of acidity that rocks your palate; lots of minerals and rocks in this wine, the terroir is all over the palate; thick and dense at the finish; this wine certainly makes up in statement what it lacks in sophistication. (15.5/20)
