Picture-perfect Dry Creek Zin, rich in wild berry, tobacco, coffee and spice flavors, just nudging into superripe chocolate-covered raisins. The tannins are sweetly ripe and gentle. With its edge of rustic charm and balancing acidity, it’s just delicious.

A lovely Zin; superdrinkable by itself for the exuberance of its fruit, yet dry enough to accompany grills. Massive in chocolate, cassis, cherry jam and peppery spice flavors, it’s balanced by smooth tannins and fine acidity.

. I loved the winery’s ’04 Lily Hill Zin, but not this wine, because Zin can tolerate heat a lot better than Syrah. This wine is stewed and soft, with coffee flavors that taste artificially sweetened.

Too sweet by far for a good recommendation. Tastes like sugared cherry and raspberry juice. Zinfandel and Syrah.

The ripest of Bella’s current quartet of Zins, this two-vineyard blend has pie-fillling flavors of black currants, cherries and cocoa, with a raisiny edge and a spicy finish. Although it’s relatively low in alcohol, the wine finishes hot.

Great Zin. From this hot vintage, it’s thick, soft and almost sweet, but the deliciousness factor is high, and the finish is entirely dry. That comes at the cost of fairly high alcohol, but the cassis, cherry, mocha and cola flavors, with their spicy finish, define Alexander Valley Zin.

I discovered Bella a few years ago and was glad to find a Zin specialist with a real commitment to vineyard terroir. Bella’s estate has produced a wonderfully dry Zin, as rich and balanced as a classic Cab, with Zin’s briary, brambly fruit. This is really one of the best Zins out there right now.

Exuberantly ripe, this Zin overpowers the palate with potent flavors of wild blackberries and cherries, crushed to a pulp and then sprinkled with cocoa, cinnamon, cassis, pepper and the essence of violets. It’s lip-smackingly good, and sweet on the finish.

More tannic than in past vintages, Bella’s ’06 Belle Canyon shows the same briary, brambly flavors, with spicy wild berries and olive tapenade accented with fresh green sage, black pepper and rosemary. Drink this exuberant Zin soon, with spicy grilled meats.

Bella has a spotty record with this wine. The ’05, from a cooler vintage, shows a Northern Rhône dryness and peppery taste, with good blackberry and currant flavors. But the tannins are very hard, almost old-fashioned in the way they shut the palate down.
