Edèlmio is a crisp white wine (an oak-aged 50-50 blend of Carricante and Chardonnay) with marine and brimstone aromas of white chalk and slate. There’s some citrus and stone fruit at the back but this wine should ultimately be appreciated for its sharp and well-defined mineral tones.

It takes a certain amount of courage to import an obscure indigenous grape like Nerello Mascalese and expect a foreign market to appreciate it. If you’re up for tasting something new, prepare yourself for deep mineral, currant and toasted almond flavors. Although this wine is less complex than the estate’s blended wines, it does paint a clear picture of the variety. Imported by Vino Bravo.

Il Drappo is a ripe, smokey and chewy expression of Nero d’Avola with plump fruit notes backed by blackberry and cherry nuances. The mouthfeel is rich, velvety and very soft. Pair this wine with spicy pork with barbecue sauce.

Pietramarina (Carricante grapes grown with the labor-intensive alberello system on Mt. Etna) is a beautiful white wine with well-defined mineral tones, solid structure and focused aromas of peach and almond. It even has a hint of tannin, and this white wine will safely age five or more years.

Serra della Contessa (named after Benanti’s most beautiful and historic vineyard) is an important wine in the history of Etna winemaking because it was among the first to show the massive potential of this dramatic terrain. This wine is executed in a richer, more opulent style with excellent complexity and endurance, capped by bright aromas of spice, forest berry and light smoke nuances.

This gorgeous, fruit-forward blend of Nero d’Avola, Tannat, Petit Verdot and Syrah from Sicily shows ripe fruit notes of blackberry and fresh prune followed by cola, tobacco and leather. The wine embodies a bold, continental style as seen through its rich concentration and velvety density.

Rovittello is an elegant and deeply sophisticated red wine from Mount Etna (the blend is Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio) that offers smokey, mineral notes of slate and brimstone followed by forest fruit and raspberry. Very nice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Native grapes of Mount Etna such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio (at 20%) are present in this lively red wine. The wine is bright, compact and redolent of fresh berry fruit, red apple and blueberry.

This vintage of Il Musico presents united aromas of pine, almond, maple syrup, candied fruit and orange zest. It’s a different, distinctive dessert wine that does not resemble most other Passitos because of the inherent spice and zestiness of its flavors.

Pietramarina is a standout enological achievement from Mount Etna that is particularly good this vintage. The wine is beautifully crisp yet drying in the mouth in the way only a deeply mineral-driven wine can be. It offers delicate aromas of honey, butterscotch and almond paste with lingering notes of white stone and flint.
