Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts out with nice black cherry and cassis aromas before transitioning to roasted plum and prune flavors that come with sticky, fierce tannins and plenty of heat and grab. A very big and hard wine with midnight darkness but little subtlety. Finishes with sweet flavors of caramel and brown sugar.

Raw on the nose, with a hard, tannic palate that features sweet black-fruit flavors, a chemical burn and raisin. The more time you spend with it, the darker and more raisiny it becomes. Finishes roasted, with licorice and rock-hard tannins.

Wines can be big and loaded with everything, yet still be hard to enjoy. This is a case in point: It weighs in at 15% and brings searing aromas of tree bark, char and shoe polish. The palate is a saturated fusing of berry syrup, chocolate and alcohol. Almost Port-like in weight and style, but also very aggressive.

Raring to go is this huge, forward Malbec made by Federico Benegas (with consultant Michel Rolland). If you know the rep of the latter, then it’s not surprising that this bomber weighs in at 15% alcohol. Ripeness is evident at all turns as the wine shows monstrous black-fruit aromas and flavors, all supported by potent oak that results in strong nuances of chocolate mint chip and mocha.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The bouquet hits with reduced aromas of children’s vitamin and pineapple, while the palate goes straight to hard cider and orange peel. It’s a firm, acidic style that finishes citric and a touch bitter. Doesn’t really smell or taste much like Chardonnay.

If you know Begegas, then you know they don’t make timid or particularly elegant wines. This blend of Cabernets Sauvigon and Franc along with Merlot is sturdy, savory, earthy and deep, which is all in the house style. The palate is big, blowsy and chewy, with roasted black fruit, earth, prune and chocolate flavors. Figgy and spicy on the finish, and ready to drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a mix of good and questionable here. The nose starts out gaseous and stinky, as if it’s begging for air. Give it time and it settles on exotic, warm blueberry and floral aromas. The palate is downright syrupy and thick, with licorice, bitter chocolate and sweet berry flavors. Rich as they come but also soft and on the brink of overripe. Not a wine for the cellar.

Benegas Malbec - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like many of this winery’s bottlings, this is heavy and raisiny. However, amid all the thickness and extract there are lusty, robust roasted black fruit flavors and candied darkness. Baked on the finish, which feels hollow and doesn’t last long.

Benegas Syrah - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Five grapes led by Malbec make up this full-force wine with black cherry, cough syrup, vanilla and cream on the nose. The palate is rich, creamy and heavy, with deep, saturated black fruit and chocolate flavors, while the finish is just as thick, maybe thicker. Extremely ripe and saturated, what many would call a “fruit bomb.”

For a five-grape blend priced like this, Don Tiburcio is well worth a go. The nose is rich and jammy, much like berry marmalade. The palate is on the heavy side, with sweet flavors of raisins, prune and chocolate. Rich on the finish, with fig and black plum as well as candied accents and tannic leftovers.
