Light in color, with leathery aromas mucked up by wet earth and caramel. The palate is tart, almost raw, with rhubarb and pie cherry flavors. Seems washed out.

With red fruit—plum, cherry, raspberry—judicious oak, soil, and a textured, medium body, this Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo blend is a winner. Nose has red fruit accented by peanuts and walnuts; finishes with chalky tannins. Drink 2004–2007. —D.M.

On the nose, it offers briary, forest flavors and sweet plum fruit; the front of the palate has more plum, oak, plus a healthy dose of red berries. Had potential to be better than it was—this would have been a great bargain if it hadn’t fallen flat on the back end. —D.M.

This offers chewy plum and berry flavors along with a finishing wave of vanilla, chocolate and coconut. It’s fruity and forward, if a bit rubbery on the finish.

Initial sweet-plum aromas are as good as it gets. Raisin enters the picture, and eventually you’ve got a heavy, clumsy, overly ripe wine that tastes and smells mostly of sappy oak and coconut.

Hits the ground running with berry and spice notes courtesy of ample oak. The mouth is equally spicy, with mid-level plum and berry fruit. Finishes fairly long, and again with a shot of oakiness that is not fully integrated.

Thin and light to the eye, with a traditional light-framed nose of earth, leather and spice. The palate offers dried cherry and orange peel, while the finish deals hints of caramel and milk chocolate. Fades away smooth and easy.

A traditional young wine with true Rioja flavors and aromas. It begins with dry, leafy and vanilla aromas along with cherry and raspberry. The palate is fairly acidic, but food will tame any wayward sharpness. For a leaner-bodied but still well-made Rioja, this is good for the money.

Simple but steady and composed. This is throwback-style Rioja crianza, meaning it’s moderately oaked and not very fat or expressive. Strawberry and cherry flavors run the show, and the mouthfeel is fresh. More innocuous than detailed, which means it’ll do fine by-the-glass.

Light in color, with Old-World aromas of leaves, dried cherries and leather. It’s a clean, easy wine with cherry and cranberry flavors coming in front of a dry, spicy finish. With proper acids and balance, its traditional qualities are admirable.
