Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This classy Walla Walla Syrah is still young and tightly wound, with juicy acids and flavors of tart berry and wild mountain fruit. As it opens in the glass it starts to show smoked ham and bacon, with black pepper in the back. Tannins are chewy and right on the border between green and black tea, but the bright raspberry fruit shines through. It’s got good, crunchy structure and a substantial finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In 2004 the estate fruit was severely damaged by the freeze, so the blend includes a fair amount from Columbia Valley vineyards. It’s very well made, fragrant and smooth, ready to drink and tasting very good. The flavors are nicely melded and show the mix of primary red fruits but also a bit of spice and a hint of caramel. Though considerably lighter than previous vintages, this is still an excellent effort.

Pure Merlot, this shows just a touch of leather in the nose, though nothing overpowering. The fruit is solid, unspectacular but well defined and balanced. The use of the new oak (about 35%) is tasteful and tasty. The wine is forward and immediately delicious, then tails off in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Cabernet from the estate’s Waliser and Yellow Jacket vineyards has been blended with about 7% Pepper Bridge Malbec. As with Beresan’s other 2004 releases, this is well made but significantly lighter than previous vintages. The fruit tastes of pretty strawberry and cherry with a hint of bell pepper; the oak adds a dusty cinnamon and mocha note to it. It’s all proportionate and very well made, just not showing the customary depth and detail.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pure Cab Franc entirely from Walla Walla Valley fruit; in fact this is the winery’s only Walla Walla Valley wine of the vintage. It’s a good effort under the difficult growing conditions of the vintage, in which all the estate fruit was from secondary buds. Flavors of bell pepper, toast and coffee dominate; this will benefit from a year or two more in bottle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is 93% Cab from Waliser and Yellow Jacket (estate) vineyards; and 7% Pepper Bridge Malbec. Fragrant with scents of berries, red currant and spicy plum, it’s a substantial and thickly tannic wine. Initially the Cab sports strong barrel flavors of chocolate and smoke, but just a little breathing time and they unwrap into appealing layers of spice, coffee and toffee through the finish. Decant this.

This is pure varietal, all from the estate vineyard, and already showing the warm, round supple strength of great Washington Merlot. Rich and sweetly ripe with spicy berries, wild red fruits and sweet chocolate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pure Cabernet Sauvignon from the Yellow Jacket, Waliser and Pepper Bridge vineyards, this supremely rich and expressive wine is riveting for its depth and detail, and it’s packed with red, blue and black fruits. Whiffs of smoke, graphite and stone add complexity, and the hint of bitter chocolate in the finish is the capper.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This “Black Widow” blend of equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot was only made in 2005 and 2006. It’s a fascinating combo—the Merlot giving breadth and flesh; the Cab Franc spotting in coffee and berry flavors.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sophisticated winemaking meets gorgeous fruit in this unusual blend: 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Syrah, 20% Merlot and 20% Cab Franc. The Syrah’s fresh citrus flavors are perfect in the context of the sappy Merlot and harder Cabs, making a wonderful blend that is immediately accessible with sweet, round fruit; then lingers into a long, textured, lively finish.
