Distinguished, with finely etched flavors of peaches and pears and subtle shadings of oak. Acdity is high and the wine has a crisp, steely backbone. Young and tight now, and will improve through 2004.

A fascinating Pinot, utterly different from those from California, with a distinct kiss of terroir in the spicy white-pepper aromas that dust underlying black cherry-kirsch flavors. Dry and crisp, with a chunky, meaty mouthfeel. A touch of spritz quickly dies down.

Takes the regular bottling to new heights, as if everything were on steroids. Massive in the fruity, berry flavors that explode in the mouth, and yet the wine easily maintains dignity and balance. A bit of spritz suggests a secondary fermentation that is not unpleasant.

From a renowned vineyard, an amazingly rich and complete wine that satisfies on every level. Has the forward flavors of raspberries and cherries that satisfy the palate, yet also possesses layers of subtle complexity in the mingling of acids, tannins and smoky oak. As delicious as it is in youth, it’s an ager through the decade.

If you’re not sure what Pinot Gris/Grigio is like and want a good starter version, try this one. It’s sweet like applesauce but dry like lemons, a seemingly impossible feat until you taste it. Plus, it’s creamy from barrel fermentation, so it feels lush.

Lean and crisp despite bells and whistles of barrel fermentation and lees aging. Sure, that adds richness and depth, but the wine stays true to its roots with high acidity and the flavor profile of apples, not pineapples. It’s a distinguished wine. That’s not a technical term, but it gets the point across.

Can a wine be light and serious too? This one is both. By light, I mean it’s not real concentrated, fruit-wise. It’s an earth-driven wine, with tomato and beet flavors, and it’s pretty tannic. It’s also light in the way it floats on the tongue. It’s very silky. But it’s a serious wine because it makes you stop and think about it, which is half the fun. It may also be ageable. —S.H.

This sweet, extracted, creamy wine oozes lushness, ripeness and richness. The power is intense, the flavors dark plum, blackberry and cola. The tannins are big and plush, making for a huge, round finish. But be warned, one reviewer found it overly dry.

Aged in 100% new oak. Mild smokiness on nose. Smooth on the palate with wild strawberry with a touch of licorice. My favorite of Bergstrom's Pinots.
