Huge wine, young and tannic, almost bitter now and not offering much relief. But of course you don’t buy Beringer PR tonight. There is indeed enormous Cabernet flavor deep down inside, offering oodles of blackberries and cherries and charry new oak, but there’s also a warning note of prune. Best after 2008.

There’s plenty of richness in this wine. It’s filled with apricots, figs, melons and nectarines, and is dry, with palate-stimulating acids.

Just what the doctor ordered in an affordable, fruity white wine. Opens with pleasant flavors of peaches and citrus fruits, and is just a little bit sweet, with a rich, honeyed finish. —S.H.

A good wine, dry and full-bodied, made in the Beringer style, namely, instantly drinkable and likeable. Has pleasant blackberry and cassis flavors. Pulled down a notch by some rough, tart notes and a hot, peppery finish. —S.H.

I have always found Beringer’s limited-production, single-vineyard Cabs to be exceedingly tannic wines, and this one still is, even though it’s more than four years old. Granted, there’s tremendous blackberry and cherry fruit, and the wine is balanced, so it should be an ager. But unless you can deal with tannins, it will be a long time. Hold until 2008 and try again.

User-friendly Chard, all toasty-spicy apples, and peaches and cream. There’s almond-skin bitterness in the aftertaste that sort of sets your teeth on edge, but food will take care of that. —S.H.

Opens with a blast of spice, anise, white peach, white chocolate and mint. Very rich and extracted, it coats the palate with fruit nectar and spice, but it’s bone dry. Balanced and distinguished; a crowd-pleaser.

This is an earthy, dry wine, with a little bit of oak. It shows modest fruit flavors that finish quick. Fulfills Chard’s basic obligations without going much further.

There’s a ton of juicy Zin character in this pleasant wine. It has bigtime cherry, black raspberry and blackberry flavors with a rich chocolate streak, and a raw, acidic edginess that cries out for food.
