Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Way too charred and roasted. The mouthfeel is acceptable and ranks as the best part of the wine. The rest is just a burnt, charred, overoaked mess with flavors of earthy berry, leather, peanut and resin. A poor effort that makes you wonder what the winery was thinking.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with creamy oak, dill, vanilla and simple berry aromas. Like the basic Beronia ’08, this crianza is fairly tart and sheer, with scratchy red fruit character and a zesty, almost scouring finish. Will do best with simple, salty foods. 300,000 cases made, so it’s a mass-produced wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Heavy on the bouquet and lacking aromatic crispness. The palate is flat, while the flavors are a mix of berry syrup and spongey red fruits. Finishes sweet, without much vitality.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is your classic light-bodied, easy drinking, food-friendly Rioja. It opens with simple berry aromas along with worn leather, while the crisp palate shows citrus, raspberry and a touch of vanilla. Zesty on the finish, too.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strained red fruit aromas are light and edgy as they lead to a choppy, dry, lean palate with snappy, tart red berry flavors. Fresh but hard-edged, with more acidity than anything. Finishes firm, piquant and pointed.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thick and chocolaty, with prune and black cherry aromas giving it a bon-bon bouquet. The palate is creamy in feel but modest in structure. Blueberry flavors are sweet and syrupy, but the layering and complexity could use some work. Good Rioja but not for $75.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tobacco, licorice, raisin, dried cherry and a puff of smoke give this healthy gran reserva an inviting, traditional bouquet. The palate is lively yet smooth, with integrated acidity pushing mature flavors of berry, plum, caramel and chocolate. A classic Rioja that is ready to drink.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strawberry and raspberry aromas are a little stalky and stemmy, while the palate is entirely regular in feel, weight and flavor. Speaking of flavors, things run a little tart and herbal, while the finish has an acidic yet fresh zestiness. Midlevel in every way.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of leather, smoked meats, charred oak and lacquer are not for the weak, while the mouthfeel is firm, deep and just right. Juicy and bright in terms of flavors, with black cherry, vanilla and coconut. Toasty and alert on the finish, but with smacking tannins. Drinkable now and good for another four or five years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A touch earthy and mulchy, but airing reveals true Rioja aromas of dried berry fruits, vanilla and dill weed. The palate runs fast and true, with piercing acidity pushing red fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry. Spicy and a little woody on the finish, with herbs and a final dash of dill.
