Whether or not you like the orange and blue packaging, the screwcap and the cutesy story about bluebirds stealing hazelnuts, the Blue Pirate is a wine worth exploring. This is juicy, fleshy, tangy Pinot Gris, loaded with flavors of just-ripe pears and hints of citrus rind, pineapple and vanilla. Big and relatively high in alcohol, this can take on major seafood, such as swordfish, sea bass or halibut.

Young and tart, this acid-driven Pinot Noir shows more herb than fruit, but it drinks well. The cranberry and wild strawberry flavors are offset with fresh herbs, rosemary and pine needles. Sharp and aggressive.
