Has aromas of vanilla bean, apple, resin and light toast. On the palate, peach is the dominant flavor, coupled with an undercurrent of olive oil and a white-peppery edge. A little soft on the palate, but quite charming nonetheless. Imported by Southland Wines.

Opens with aromas of black soil, mint and cola. Its acids are lively, its cherry fruit tight, and an undercurrent of eucalyptus ties it all together—all characters that you either love or you don’t. The wine has a lot going for it, though, and is worth a look. Imported by Southland Wines.

The bouquet is basically nonexistent—it’s that flat and mute. Weak but tart flavors of plum and strawberry lead into a finish that has sticky, overt tannins. This wine isn’t offensive, but it has no real personality to speak of.

This weighty California lookalike nevertheless comes across as balanced, thanks to a long, mouthwatering finish. Citrus and yellow-plum flavors stand up well to a hefty dose of vanilla and buttered toast.

This individual and exotic wine boasts aromas of sweet bay leaves, dried apricots and crushed black pepper. The fruit flavors are tart, veering toward red cherries and apple skin, finishing with firm acids and tannins. Drink young with herbed roasts to help bring out the fruit. —J.C.

Complex berry, vanillin oak, fig and pepper aromas set up this round and flavorful wine. The palate, too, offers interesting notes—blueberry, cinnamon, licorice and more. Yes, there’s plenty of wood, but it’s nicely integrated here. The velvety mouthfeel and mint and plum elements play out on the long finish.
