With no oak, what you get in the aroma are the prettiest, cleanest scents of ripe apples, peaches, pears and spices. Would earn a higher score if it weren’t soft and syrupy-sweet.

Smells vegetal and unripe, with broccoli aromas that turn medicinal sweet in the mouth.

Soft as melted butter, and oaky with vanilla and smoke, this wine offers ripe flavors of red and black cherries and cocoa, with just enough crispness to balance.

Rustic and simple, this Merlot smells a little vegetal, and then turns fairly sweet in fruit jam flavors. This is a second label from San Saba.

This Merlot won’t challenge Napa, but it’s a nicely ripe, dry wine. It has powerful blackberry jam and cherry flavors and firm tannins, and finishes long in fruity taste, with a chocolaty sweetness.

With no oak on this wine, you can taste how beautifully Monterey terroir develops Chardonnay. The wine is all crisp acids and ripe flavors of guava, pineapple, mango and peach. Vanilla, too, which must come from the grapes, not barrels. What a delightfully drinkable wine this is.

You want pure Monterey Chardonnay? Go here. It’s all about peaches, apricots, pineapples, limes and kiwis, not to mention fresh crisp acidity. Where all that cream came from is a mystery, given that the wine is unoaked. Good wine, good price.

An unoaked Chard, and it’s fascinating to see what Santa Lucia Highlands fruit tastes like. It’s vibrantly fruity, a wine whose citrus, apple and peach flavors are highlighted by the crisp acids characteristic of the appellation.

Soft and fruity, with cherry, raspberry and melted chocolate flavors that finish dry and spicy. This easy wine will pair well with an upscale cheeseburger made with blue cheese.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Chardonnay has all the highlights of Central Coast white wines. It’s dry, acidic, pure and clean in varietal character, which in this case means pineapples, golden mangoes and white peaches. There’s something so vanilla rich, you’d swear there was new oak, but there isn’t. This is an entirely unwooded wine.
