Raisin meets rustic on the nose, where roasted fruit aromas are toughened up by leather. The palate is full but soft, with chunky, sweet plum and berry flavors. Chocolate appears on the finish, and overall this is what you should expect from a young, value-priced Malbec.

Oily matchstick aromas run counter to the wine’s innocuous color. The palate is light in weight but heavy in blossomy flavors of orange, lime, tangerine and other citrus fruits. Lacks the lychee/tropical quality that makes Torrontés special, and finishes bitter and pithy.

This wine shows molasses and Boston baked beans on the nose along with peppery spice. The bouquet is a touch stewy, but the palate delivers core black cherry and cola along with tight, ripe tannins. The wine takes a little while to warm up and it remains saucy, but that’s not uncommon for Mendoza.

Violet in color, with a huge blast of barrel on the nose. This is one oaky youngster, but amid the creamy, toasty wood-driven notes you’ll find forward black cherry and plum fruit and a nice spiral of vanilla, mocha and coffee. Full-bodied and controlled, but definitely heavily oaked.

A different type of Mendoza Malbec, with exotic, floral aromas and graham cracker sweetness. The palate is fresh but short on structure, while the flavor profile deals blackberry, herbal notes and bramble bush. Finishes a bit hard with no deviation from the palate

After sinking the 2005 version of this wine for being discombobulated, this seems like a total turn-around. It’s dense and jammy like the previous year, with similar toasted qualities. But it’s also better balanced and mentally challenging, with flavors of black olive, baked berry fruit and earth. Finishes rich and oily, with a distinct coffee flavor. Drink now into 2010.

More raw than the 2007, with hot, vital aromas leading to a pointed palate of hard tannins, acid and narrow blueberry, mulberry and tea flavors. Lots of power and forwardness but runs short on body, feel and finesse. Like many 2008s, it’s acidic and tight.

A little stinky and oily, which is often the downfall of the variety. The palate has a viscous grab to it and the flavors are rather generic and rudimentary, i.e. simple apple and melon with a mild chemical burn. Seems only semifresh at a young age.

Wet, refreshing and clean, with lychee and lime aromas. The palate has a touch of oily richness to it, but mostly it delivers proper honeydew, lime and powdered sugar flavors on a whispy body. Cleansing on the finish, with a final wave of green apple.

A little savory on the nose, with medicinal red berry aromas. The palate is medium in intensity and regular in feel, with earthy, herbal flavors of cherry and raspberry. Shows a meaty hint on a short, average finish.
