It doesn’t take a great brain to figure out that this is a rocking, beautifully crafted international red wine. Mint, spice and chocolate aromas are dipped in lovely new oak, while the palate is all about bold plum backed by coffee and mocha. Stellar now and shows all signs of a wine that will only get better. Imported by Vias Imports.

A mellow, pure Malbec, with soft, subtle aromas of graham cracker, licorice, blueberry and chocolate. The palate has a welcome freshness that melds acidity and ripe fruit into a correct whole, and the flavors of blackberry, spice, coffee and chocolate work great together. Just right for the money, with blackness, richness and balance. contains 90% Malbec with 9% Merlot and a drop of Petit Verdot.

As per usual, this Patagonian beauty ranks high on our scale of classy Malbecs. It’s well-oaked, which results in hickory and campfire aromas alongside dark berries and mineral. The palate is ripe and meaty, with blackberry and coffee flavors. Some vanilla and coconut on the finish is a reminder of the fine oak treatment this wine receives. Fine acidity and tannic structure only help it to achieve its goal.

A deep-berried wine with penetrating fruit character and very smooth tannins. In fact, this is such a smooth wine that it almost registers as thick and syrupy. But down deep, at its very core, there’s just enough pulse to make it vital. Still, there’s no denying the blackberry, dark plum and raisiny richness on this Patagonian Malbec. Drink now through 2009.

Seems like the most extracted, borderline raisiny A-Lisa to date (it began with the 2005 vintage). But if a touch of overripeness isn’t a turn-off, then this meaty Malbec from Patagonia will be appealing for its plum, berry and chocolate talking points. Because it’s so full and luggish, we say drink it soon.

A savory and smoky wine that impresses with its licorice, spice and bacon aromas along with corpulence and length. There’s more than enough oak here, but the sandalwood, mocha and wood-driven spice notes blend into the wine’s big-berry fabric rather than dominate. Overall there’s fine balance, black fruit essence, depth of flavor and a long, toasty finish. 1,800 cases produced. Drink now through 2013.

A conflicted and hence confounding wine. The nose is very oaky, but it’s a pointed, almost piercing wood and clove bouquet. The wine is fierce in the mouth, with kicking tannins and acidity pushing bulldozer-like blackberry and bitter espresso flavors. With 6% Merlot, this Patagonian Malbec has its virtues but isn’t as friendly as past vintages.

Very purple and expressive, with charred barrel aromas that border on burnt. Fortunately, the fruit below is quite healthy, but besides oozing blueberry and blackberry it’s not overly defined or regal. Put this Patagonian Malbec into the category of vibrant and interesting and you won’t be disappointed.

As always, Noemía is proof that excellent Malbec can come from Patagonia. Big, bold and smoky on the nose, with blackberry and bacon. The palate is broad and bulky but balanced, while flavors of smoked meats, black fruits, licorice and especially clove stand out. Dark with a persistent clove note on the finish. Best now through 2012.

After opening with graham cracker, plum and ripe berry, the wine settles into a thick and heavy place that’s rich but bordering on cloying. This is a heavy style of Malbec that tastes of ripe black fruits and herbs. It’s toasty, full, thick as can be and long on the finish. Drinkable now but could use a couple of more years for everything to mesh.
