Interesting Malbec with character and individuality. The nose is savory and smoky, with spice and floral aromas. Full and ripe in the mouth, where roasted black fruit, clove, spice and cola all make a showing. Textured and sizable late, with a coffee note to the finish. Drink now through 2011.

Excellent Malbec at a very good price. Ripe, big, burly and a powder keg of alluring cassis, licorice and inky aromas. Rich, stout and smooth in the mouth, with generous black cherry, baked plum, coffee and chocolate flavors and finishing notes. Pure as can be; drink now through 2012.

This lighter-bodied blend has a lot in common with a good Côtes-du-Rhône. It’s mildly spicy but also quite fruity; the nose exudes red-berry and cinnamon aromas, while the palate is warm and just slightly oaky. A nice bistro wine.

Slightly rugged at first, with strong scents of leather, earth and subdued dark fruit. The palate is classic Malbec: soft, chewy and medium in depth. Not terribly complex or long on the finish, but satisfying.

Also called Classico, this prestige blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon hits like a hammer on the nose and then flows into a semi syrupy palate that offers ripeness but not as much harmony as the winery's more modest Malma. Maybe it's the Merlot and Cab, but the wine seems a bit short and solitary given its high aspirations.

Bold berry, rubber and coffee aromas give this basic Malbec some style to work off. The palate has bounce and fullness, with ripe black cherry and cassis flavors. Comfortable mouthfeel and finishing notes help it meet its goal: true Malbec with no glaring flaws.

NQN’s Picada 15 line is a consistent source for good value among red wines. This four-grape blend (led by Cabernet Sauvignon) has a slight aroma of burnt leaves and tire rubber, but it settles with air into a good whole. Flavors of sweet berry fruits have an herbal edge, while the mouthfeel and finish are creamy, rich and smooth. Nice wine for the price.

Opens with rich, broad, semiroasted aromas of black fruit, rubber and earth. The palate is basic and mildly tannic, with black plum, baked berry and mild herbal flavors. Has a syrupy profile on one hand, but tannic bite keeps it on course. Tastes good as it gets the job done.

Dark and a little baked on the nose, with prune, fig and earthy aromas. The palate is a bit hard and reduced, with pounding tannins, but the fruit is equally big and ripe, so it all seems to be correct. Mellow on the finish, with a hint of chocolate. Good Merlot for the price.

This new Patagonian winery is doing better with its reds. This SB is honeyed and slightly mealy; the palate starts out soft and chunky, with apple and peach flavors that are less than zesty and slightly oxidized. Still, complexity arises as there’s a lasting butterscotch taste that is not unpleasant.
