One of the year’s best red wine values has to be this fully ripe and totally structured Malbec made by Alberto Antonini (winemaker for Altos Las Hormigas) and Hector Durigutti. The color almost gives away its power; and if not, the aromas of marinated meat, plum and blackberry essence will. Saturated, thick and modern, but made right. Perfect with beef.

A nice wine with lean, agile citrus aromas that suggest grapefruit and passionfruit. The palate has some scour and bursting acidity, while flavors of grapefruit and other citrus fruits are crisp. Tangy on the finish. On the right path as far as Chilean SB goes.

A joint venture between the Renacer winery of Argentina and Chile and Allegrini from the Veneto in Italy. Thus it makes sense that this five-grape blend is done in the Amarone style, with concentrated, dried grapes. Aromas are generous, minty and floral, and the palate is jammy and concentrated. Rich and a little raisiny, just like Amarone. Drink now.

Dark, sweet and rooty on the nose, with a warm, soft outlook. The palate is bold and thorough, with ripe berry, plum and chocolate flavors. Per usual, Punto Final is ripe, sweet and big, with a peppery finish and toasty, jammy warmth.

Charcoal and ripe berry fruit announce this as a serious, masculine Malbec. The palate answers the bell, delivering tight blackberry and cassis flavors in front of a tannic, sturdy finish. Shows great foundation and potential; best in late 2007 into 2008.

Potent and black, with inky, minty aromas that suggest asphalt, tobacco and blackberry. The palate is gritty and seriously concentrated, with dark, oak-driven fruit that carries a tight, lemony personality. Licorice, toast and other black-ish notes bring it home. Ripe but can still age for another 5+ years.

Among full-bodied, old-vines Malbec, this is an unbridled winner. The nose is rooty and sweet, but also inky and dark. And the palate is totally pure, with snappy tannins, fine acidity and loads of black fruit flavor mixed with tobacco and coconut. Racy, juicy and delicious as it enters its prime. Drink now through 2013.

Is there a better, more consistent Malbec on the market today than Punto Final? The 2005 is typically rich and dense, with saturated berry aromas and a strong but balanced oak element. The palate is a potpourri of berries, chocolate and vanilla, while the mouthfeel is juicy and stacked. Quite delicious; this is the type of wine that gives Argentine Malbec its good name.

Basic but full and ripe, with black cherry and cassis aromas. The palate has some snap and clack to it, but flavors of raspberry are softened and enriched by vanilla and creamy accents. Shows more on the nose than in the mouth, but overall it is a nice wine.

Powerful from the beginning, with depth of fruit to the nose as well as floral notes. The palate is a bit more simple than I expected; it’s fresh and properly acidic but the flavors of berry and black cherry are jammy and there seems to be a hint of overripeness to the wine. Still, it’s a dark, lusty Malbec with purity and nice touches of vanilla, mocha and coffee. Drink now.
