9:15AM - This old school-style Bordeaux blend is the kind of wine you want to toss back and forth between two decanters for a minute or two in order to really coax out its stuffing. Without doing so it's unfortunately peaked (hint of VA) and syrupy. But when you do, it unlocks some really interesting layers of aromatics and flavors that are big and pleasant. For starters, it's med+ ruby in color with a brick rim; aromas are initially fruity: pie cherries and brambly raspberry as well as some strawberry preserves. Then, some spice sneaks up from underneath, very much like a cherry pie flavored with cinnamon might smell fresh out of the oven. Then there's a hint of bell pepper and pencil shavings (Cab talking) and some dust and flint (terroir?). On the palate it's high in alcohol but the finish is clean, which saves it from a lower rating. Tannins are somewhat drying but I bet with aeration they'll soften up. The flavors are of coffee bean and dried red fruits (again, may just be closed) as well as a hint of butterscotch on the finish.
