Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Vanilla-cherry aromas kissed with toast, cinnamon and nutmeg. Full and soft, the palate picks up some earthy tobacco nuances that extend through the long, delicate finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Early nosing reveals some stewy, raisiny qualities along with hints of cinnamon and red bell pepper. The palate is heavy, with no ifs, ands or buts about it. And sticking to that theme, the finish is flat and soft. Has its good points but seems tired and slightly overripe.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mildly warm and roasted up front, with aromatics similar to tomato, spice, leather and reserved red fruits. The palate is a bit streamlined and tart, with cherry and raspberry flavors. Tight and borderline hard on the finish; this wine needs food to smooth out its harsher elements.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Violet in color, with dark, rubbery aromas that scream “new” and “modern.” This new-age heavyweight spent 15 months in French oak, and the nose is lemony as a result. The palate, meanwhile, is rich and full, but still rather oaky and blunt. Finishing notes of espresso, chocolate and lemon peel preserve interest. Imported by Codorniu Cava & Estates.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The oak aging this received is hardly noticeable under the rich cherry fruit, but it’s there, lending a silky, creamy texture and hints of vanilla. Mild tannins give this short-term aging potential, but it can be enjoyed now if you like your fruit forward.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Charred and smoky on the nose, with solid, dry fruit notes. Very middle-of-the-road in terms of flavors and feel. There’s light plum, cherry and apple skins, with acidity on the back end. Fades with a bit of oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with bright, popping cherry aromas that are straightforward, much like the rest of the show. The palate is regular and healthy in feel, with standard cherry and raspberry flavors. Finishes the slightest bit toasty and warm. Nice but basic Rioja.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth tannins, lively cherry and plum fruit and subtle though judicious oak—a recipe for success, in my book. Finishes medium-long with more red fruit, plus some floral notes; nose offers smoldering, musky-earth aromas. Drink 2004+. —D.M.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with familiar Rioja aromas of tobacco, wet clay, dried cherries and flower blossom. For a wine from a poor vintage, this is quite nice and natural. It offers red plum, cherry and tobacco on the palate, and overall the balance, mouthfeel and composure are positive. Not an outright great wine, but a real good effort considering the year.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Earthy black cherry aromas give this easygoing Rioja an honest and true nose. The palate is almost what you’d call flush, but on the other hand it’s snappy and fresh, with commendable black cherry and plum flavors. With a touch of oak and mocha on the finish, it’s a complete wine that should come across familiar.
