is one way to describe this Cabernet-Malbec blend. The bouquet is full of smoky balsam wood, leather and solid berry fruit, while the palate is both juicy and plentiful as it pushes equal amounts of bold black fruit and warming oak. A very solid Argentinean icon wine with impeccable structure and liveliness. Better in 2008.

Sweet and open on the nose, with blackberry and pure grape aromas. The palate has a tight, drawing texture but rewarding flavors of spice and roasted berry fruit. Long and flavorful on the finish, with bite and tannic residue. A wine with positive components but a rough young feel.

For a sense of class, elevation and style that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, this blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon is very much worth a go. It’s versatile and stocky, but it’s no fruit-only lug. That said, expect saturated berry flavors, herbal hints, baked notes and firm tannins. Masculine but approachable. Drink now through 2011.

From the Catena-Rothschild partnership that is Bodegas Caro, Amancaya blends Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon in an appealing way. The nose is a touch bretty and rustic, but airing reveals stout fruit and structure. The flavor profile revolves around ripe plum and berry, while coffee and a touch of heat and alcohol work the finish. Another year in bottle would not hurt this wine.

This Rothschild-Catena blend is dark as night on the nose, with a strong blast of freshly laid pavement. The palate is a little more acidic and snappy than expected, and as the wine unfolds it offers clean and persistent red-fruit flavors but nothing extraordinary.

Our highest praise goes out to Lafite-Rothschild and Nicolas Catena for putting together this excellent, highly affordable red blend. It smells cool, minty and deeply fruity, with developed blackberry, cassis and smoked meat flavors. Textbook across the board. Masculine and impressive.

This has to rank as one of the world’s best wines for the money. The depth is impeccable and the balance and pop are commendable. All hail Argentina, or at least Barons de Rothschild and Nicolas Catena for coming up with this affordable blend of Malbec and Cabernet that pulses with berry fruit, waves of chocolate and so much toasty persistence that it almost requires brakes. For under $20 this is faultless stuff. Imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.

After an earthy, aggressive, almost sweaty start, this joint-venture red from Nicolas Catena and Eric de Rothschild finds its course and manages to improve. The palate is full of acid-driven, amplified cherry and plum flavors, and while there’s a hint of buttery oak resting on the finish, that should subside with airing and a good food pairing. Commendations go out to this never-fail, high-end blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. It’s arguably a touch brambly and sharp at first, but give it time and any stark, tough characteristics go straight out the window. What’s left is nothing but dark-fruit primary flavors, coconut and vanilla finishing notes, and lots of length. Maybe not the best Caro of all time but still a fine wine.

What a pretty blend of Cabernet and Malbec is Caro, a joint venture between Nicolas Catena and the Lafite-Rothschild enterprise. This wine is wonderfully oaked and smooth, with mocha and fine berry aromas sending a positive message of what’s to come. The palate is intense but friendly, with cassis, blackberry and vanilla flavors. Fine grip and good acidity ensure its place among Argentina’s upper echelon of wines.
