Flat up front, with a gassy nose. The flavor profile offers modest red fruit and a touch of green. Lots of wood grain rears up on the finish. Covers the easy bases but goes no further.

The bouquet offers some pleasant chocolate and root beer notes, but the fruit is distant and murkiness rises with each passing minute. That said, the berry and plum fruit is pretty good, while the finish is decent. Not a lot of depth or substance, but still steady.

A simple, drink-me-now, light- to medium-weight Tempranillo, the Viña Rey is just this side of tired. Red plum fruit wears a barky-chalky coat; plum and cherry round out the finish.

While there are nice aromas of red and black plums on the nose, the wine seems to take the "70 Barrels" designation a little literally—it seems more an indication of the amount of char and wood that the wine shows than a mark of a limited production. Burned caramel flavors overshadow the red fruit; dry tannins and some charred oak round out the finish. ***PLEASE RECHECK PRICE. THE ENTRY DIDN'T HAVE "70 BARRICAS" DESIGNATION WHEN I FOUND IT; I ADDED IT BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THE '01 TEMPRANILLO AND THE '01 '70 BARRICAS' ARE TWO DIFFERENT WINES.
