Luzon’s signature Best Buy red blends one-third Syrah with two-thirds Monastrell, and always with consistent results. Year after year, we like this wine’s lusty, broad fruit, richness and overall balance. It’s not sophisticated or complex, but it is deep, clean and very tasty.

For several years we’ve been impressed with this under-$10 Merlot, and in this go around the quality and purity are shockingly good. Aromas of smoke, mineral and sweet perfume set the stage for amplified cherry, raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors. A medium-bodied but healthy and spicy finish secures the final favorable votes. Best Buy.

This Merlot is quite dark, with plentiful black plum, anise and toasty oak aromas and flavors. Medium-weight and nicely balanced, it’s smooth and jammy, yet avoids the sweet or candied quality of so many warm-climate wines. Displays a touch of class for an easy drinker, finishing with decent length and a faint earth-mineral note. Best now through 2004. —M.M.

Attractive, full-force plum and berry aromas with a fruity, rich, concentrated palate of black fruit and plum. Smooth, nothing fancy, and always solid for those looking for a big, full-bodied wine at an affordable price. Luzon is the definition of a go-to producer.

This wine comes in two waves. The first is youthful and aggressive; it carries maple and sawdust aromas, and tons of powerful plum, cassis and smoky oak. The next wave is textured and chocolaty, and a little bit dark. Overall, it might not ooze elegance, but it’s certainly lively and big. The blend is Monastrell, Cabernet and Tempranillo.

Satisfying from the purple color to the sweet bouquet to the clean palate to the long finish. It’s a little simple and syrupy, but overall there’s plenty of freshening acidity and flavors of plum, berry and chocolate to make it a complete and balanced wine. And that’s really all you should hope for in this price category.

Smells like fruit bubble gum and even though it settles down with time in the glass, it really doesn’t offer much besides jumpy fruit. Devoid of complexity despite being clean and juicy. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For several years we’ve been impressed with this under-$10 Merlot, and this year the quality and purity are once again exemplary. Aromas of smoke, mineral and sweet leather set the stage for amplified cherry, raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors. A medium-bodied but healthy and spicy finish secures the final favorable votes.

This blows away the majority of California Merlots retailing for two or three times as much. Dried herbs accent creamy mocha and black cherries in a supple, harmonious whole that’s as true to the variety as can be. The 2001 vintage is shaping up as a great one for Spain, and here’s a chance to get in on the ground floor.

Another fine Best Buy from a winery that knocks 'em out year after year. This Monastrell-Syrah blend delivers full, rustic aromas of tomato, baked berry and salsa. The palate is saucy and smooth, with blackberry flavors mixed with herbs and tomato. Textured, healthy, snappy and a good partner for full- flavored foods.
