Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Jammy, creamy and superripe, with raspberry, burnt toast and coffee on the thick, meaty nose. Flavors reminiscent of an ice cream sundae work the palate, which means berry syrup, chocolate sauce and vanilla are highly prominent. Texturally speaking, this is a smooth, soft and plush wine. It pushes the envelope on ripeness, but that’s become the Cirsion way. An awesome wine that deserves a proper decanting.

Starts out hard and crusty, but finds its place with time. The palate is bright with plum, berry and vanilla shadings, while the finish is dry, toasty and offers up vanilla and coffee accents. Has proper finesse, balance and style, but also a bit of tang and scour.

Dark as night, pure as silk, and rich as a sultan. This one wine defines the best of the new wave; a great high-end product from a perfect vintage. It’s intense, spicy, racy and still soft enough to wrap yourself around. Licorice, crushed peppercorn, chocolate, espresso and blackberry are just some of what you can pull from this baby. Cellar a few years then explore.

It’s hard to imagine the subsequent vintage surpassing this purring monster, but it could and probably will. That said, the current 2000 is magnificent in its dark masculinity and layered complexity. The fruit aromas are perfect, the spice notes exotic, and overall it’s just a blast to drink. Lots of sweet oak is still front and center, so give it until 2006 for it to show even better.

A sweet, ripe, jammy style for Roda I, with smooth tannins, corpulence and more than adequate minerality and power. This is not a flabby wine despite the heat of the vintage, and the lush cassis, blackberry and mocha notes come together on the back palate and finish.

Alert and snappy on the nose, with no “hot” or stewy characteristics from the steamy year. Raspberry and cassis flavors are supported by tight, crisp oak, while the finish offers mineral, coffee and cherry essence. A solid wine from a hellishly warm vintage.

A stylish wine that’s on the spot. The nose deals berry, earth, rubber, toast and vanilla all in integrated fashion, while the palate is full, fleshy, fresh and pure. Flavors of juicy raspberry and plum are developed, while the acidity is pulsing. Shows good winemaking as well as positive raw materials.

Char and chocolate, then a dollop of rum raisin and black cherry, and there is your nose. This version of Cirsion, one of our very favorite modern Riojas, is relatively soft, raisiny and simple, and for that it doesn’t quite rate with some of the past vintages, which were spectacular. But that doesn’t mean you won’t love the wine’s smooth texture, cocoa and baked berry flavors, and its overall generous character. Drink now through 2010.

Clearly Bodegas Roda threw all its best fruit at its ’02 Roda I: it’s as smooth, succulent and ripe as we’ve come to expect from this front-line alta expression Tempranillo. There’s oak, vanilla, tannin, resin and lots of studly red and black fruit to give you something to ponder. Good now and better in a couple of years.

Yes, it costs a fortune, but this first-of-its-kind release from Bodegas Roda delivers tons of extraction and concentration along with subtleties that complete the package. It’s yet another new-world-styled red from Spain sporting incredible density and depth. Flavors of prune, coffee and smoked meat yield to a finish of soft vanilla oak and the blackest coffee. Brooding, earthy, and intense now, it will become friendlier after a couple of years in the cellar.
