Color and mouthfeel are the highlights of this exceedingly green wine. Try as we might to figure out why, this is one of the more vegetal wines we’ve tried from Rioja. It’s green-bean city on the nose, and the flavor profile is dominated by tomato, herbs and bell pepper. Think 1990s Chilean Merlot, early Super Tuscans or New Zealand Cabernet and you will know what we mean by “green.”

Sweet and creamy goes this ruby tinted Garnacha-based rosado. All the way through it pounds the palate with a grabby fistful of red-fruit flavor and sugar. Colorful and generous, but with no finesse.

Charred on top and showing roasted berry aromas underneath. This wine sizes up as a plump, round berry ball with low-to-medium acidity and soft tannins. It’s just mildly herbal and rooty, with a soft finish. It flows smoothly and won’t cause any eyebrows to be raised. Drink now.

Quite ripe on the nose, such that raisin and sweetness are front and center. Saturated in the mouth, but as a whole it’s a bit flabby and, for the most part, it’s neither here nor there. Flavors of plum and berry tilt to the dark side, while the finish is short but inoffensive.

A throwback style, with creamy vanilla, dill, tomato and raspberry aromas. The palate is just round and lush enough to not be edgy, but there’s ample acid to drive the plum, cherry, cola and raisin flavors toward a clean, linear finish. No miracles here; just good, well-made, fairly traditional Rioja.

A little tight and reticent, but airing reveals aromas of raisin, marzipan and earth. The palate is measurably peppier, with lean but healthy red-fruit flavors stepping up and demanding to be noticed. As for feel, expect grabby tannins and shortness. Probably at its best now but will hold steady for at least five more years.

Soft and sweet, with raisin and red-licorice aromas. This wine seems caught between the new style of Rioja and the traditional. The result is that it vacillates between lean and dry, rich and sweet, without settling on either. Imported by CIV/USA.

Clean but rugged, with meaty, solid aromas. Cherry, berry and cola create a sturdy, fruity attack, while the finish is round and medium in size. A pedestrian, good red for everyday drinking.

A blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha fruit that leaves a red tint and sweet aromas. The palate has plenty of jump and bounce in its step, while the flavors are both sweet and sour. A little sheer but a good wine with ample character.
