Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Surprisingly sweet and ripe nose with sugar-washed lemon scents mixed with minerals, smoke and a touch of perfume; sweet and ripe in the front of the mouth, with lots of sugared lemon flavors; big wine with quite a bit of body, softened acidity, but still very much evident; not a blockbuster of a wine, but thoroughly enjoyable and ready to drink. (17/20)

Tight nose, lots of minerals and spices, acidity and citrus fruit aromas, smoke, quite closed; this is a much more serious wine; tight flavors and not yet ready but showing complex textures and flavors; lots of lemon acidity in this wine; solid lemon flavors mixed with earthen and mineral touches; much more serious than the Latour. (18/20)

Sweet nose, but also laced with lots of minerals, slate and shale, earthen, smoky, very herbal; opens in the mouth with lemony and minerally flavors, quite well focused and intense; there is a lot of ripe fruit in the middle of the mouth, but the wine has the classic Bonneau du Martray leanness; long finish, dry and intense with a beautiful balance of ripeness and austerity. This wine ordered from the wine list of Bastide in Los Angeles; soft scented nose with lots of vanilla and honeyed fruit, a bit elusive and lacking focus, but soft enticing aromas; smooth and silky in the mouth, almost buttery, sweet honeyed fruit, but lacks a core; the wine is pleasant enough, and certainly has great softened textures, but it lacks edges; a bit diffuse and flabby; still good for the palate if not exactly grand cru material. (17.5/20)

Wonderful nose, first aromas are of sauerkraut and cabbage, then emerging into buttery sweetness and spiciness with touches of licorice and herbs; sweet and round in the mouth with wonderful core of lemons and fresh acidity; round and unctuous at the same time; very balanced; a wonderful example of this wine, and only flawed by being a bit short at the end. (18.5/20)

Sweet and minerally nose with touches of barnyard and smoke, deep and layered aromas, sophisticated; sweet fruit in the front of the mouth, wonderful layers of flavor, smooth and honeyed, beautifully balanced; nuances of shale and earth in between the fruit flavors; long finish with sweet, ripe flavors that show great balance and poise. Sweet spicy fruit define this nose, with an almost buttery nature, interesting aromas of lemon verbena and a hint of sweet camphor; sweet and rich in the front of the mouth, but also showing nice traces of minerals and lemon peel flavors; quite spicy and peppery on the palate; strong citric flavors at the end with lemon juice concentrate lingering in the mouth. Several bottles of this wine tasted over the year, and all consistent; wonderful nose of lemon peel and herbs, touch of honey, lemons and exotic spices, light and fresh aromas; clean and crisp in the mouth, lemons and lemon juice mixed with a subtle blend of herbs and spices, crisp but rich with real grip; this is a nicely balanced wine that provides both a buttery richness while maintaining a crispness with lemon acidity throughout; long, smooth satisfying finish; drunk side by side on one occasion with the 1990, and clearly the better of the two. Soft, silky nose, quite a serious level of acidity in the nose, lemon zest, minerals and smoke; elegant and refined in the mouth with assertive and big sweet fruit flavors; lots of lemony acidity; minerals spices and powerful flavors; luscious fruit with succulent flavors; huge acidity at the finish with a very long tail of flavors; perhaps more acidity in the mouth than a wine with better balance would show. An amazing nose here with powerful floral, perfumed scents of oleander and white flowers mixed with an intense sweetness of confectioners’ sugar and very ripe fruit; in the mouth the wine is rich and sweet with intense flavors of candied fruit and almonds, the dominant taste is lemon drops; there is complexity here with lemon peel and flashes of other citrus flavors, but the wine remains focused; there is a lot of muscular acidity in the wine, and this keeps it from tipping into the sweet and unctuous trap; long finish, focused and intense to the end.
