Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Incredible nose here, so perfumed and aromatic, soaring aromas of flowers but tempered with sour mash and the presence of macerated fruit, barnyardy as it should be, earthen, but deeply intense with black cherry aromas; sweet and fresh in the mouth with the presence of layers of black cherry fruit mixed with an array of berries and spices; perfectly balanced; this might be as good as this wine gets; fresh and vibrant and loaded with the subtlety of Burgundy; clean, fresh finish stays in the mouth for a full minute at the end. Try as one might, it is virtually impossible to present a good wine from this dismal vintage, and de Vogue cannot make a silk purse from a sow’s ear, although they tried; the first nose on this wine is quite appealing with sweet perfumed aromas that has hints of wildflowers and licorice, cherries, earth and smoke, but alas it fades pretty quickly; in the mouth, the wine makes a valiant effort to produce, opening with sweet fruit, but these lose the battle almost immediately to dry, austere tannins that leave one feeling like one is sucking on cardboard; while this wine is better than most of this vintage it has not saved the collapse that is inevitable. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This wine opened with a better nose than many from this dismal vintage, showing some real perfumed aromas, ripe fruit, black spices and pepper, but also a lot of dry woody aromas that presage what was to come; fails to make it in the mouth; although sweet at the beginning, the wine quickly turns dry and wooden; there is some citric acidity that attempts to breathe life into the wine, but the final outcome is bitter and dry, and whatever fruit there was in this wine has long since abandoned a sinking ship.
