Bookwalter has done an exciting turnaround as a new generation takes the reins. This is a vivid, forward, toasty and inviting Cabernet. It shows nice, round fruit and plenty of toasty oak. There are dry tannins as well, and it’s all balanced out for near term enjoyment. Not a big wine, but delicious and well made.

A dense, dark, mysterious wine that could easily pass for a Spring Mountain Cab costing three times as much. This sensational value wine is packed with powerful, dark fruit, muscled around modest oak and buttressed with spicy acid. A knockout!

Barrel fermentation, with the full malolactic treatment, yields a ripe, buttery wine that sets up rich and plush on the palate. Despite the fat, buttery style it isn't overblown or flabby, and lingers through a clean, polished finish.

The deep green-gold color and bananas-and-crackers bouquet suggest the full barrel treatment was used here. Full, fleshy and ripe, it tastes like mashed bananas in butter sauce...in a good way. Finishes short and a bit sharp.

The 2005 continues along the established path of this rising star winery. It’s big, no holds barred, rich and jammy, and just a bit warm at 14.8% alcohol. The fruit is nicely woven together, brambly and dark, and coated with clean barrel flavors of coffee and chocolate. Everything is balanced and forward, but you get the sense that this wine is holding something back for the future.

Rich, ripe and fruit-powered, this retains more of the high tones (and citrus) than the Merlot. It’s powerful and young, smooth but a bit chalky on the finish. It’s not yet knit together, and I wonder if and when it will do so.

A pleasant blend of two Cabs, Merlot and a pinch of Syrah. Unpretentious and affordable, it’s a delight, with firm, muscular fruit, compact and lightly spicy, taking the forefront. If there is oak it is invisible, and unnecessary. The wine shows the simple pleasures of well-ripened Columbia valley grapes.

Powerful, pungent, ripe black cherry fruit assaults the nostrils, leading into a taut, slightly gamy, muscular and dense with layers of fruit, tar, smoke and earth. Give it 6 to 8 years to unwrap and it will be sensational.
