Lots of sulfur and gas at first. That’s followed by grainy aromatic notes and modest raspberry and cherry fruit. Grippy tannins, a medium-weight palate and some green notes keep it down. At moments it strives to impress, but at other times it simply fails to cut the mustard.

Quite funky at first, with leather, earth and a certain murkiness that blows off after airing. Features ample black plum and chocolate on the palate, with minty, herbal notes to the finish. Seems mildly overoaked.

The nose of this Sangiovese-Merlot is muscular and broad, with a hint of earth and mushroom sneaking in between the folds of deep red fruit. More robust fruit fills out the palate, while it finishes long and chocolaty, with notes of coffee. Quite sturdy and eminently satisfying.

Distant toasted notes of nut and vanilla mix well with this wine’s bright berry fruit flavors. In the mouth, this is a thin and streamlined wine with good acidity and sharp berry flavors.

After some rough front-end sulfur blew off, nice cherry fruit with dried spice accents showed. The profile is lean and dry, and there’s length to the finish; also some biting tannins.

This wine spends two years in barrique, and it shows in its strong cedar and coconut aromas. On the palate, there's sufficient fruit to stand up to the oak, with intense sour black cherries and leafy tobacco and mushroom flavors. Much better than a bottle reviewed in the April 2001 issue.

This bottling from Radda in Chianti delivers an even, horizontal approach with wide-reaching tones that recall ripe fruit, smoked bacon, marinade and spice box. The wine tastes raw and pulpy thanks to its meaty intensity and ends with bright notes of red fruit.

Aromas of leather and tar override the spicy fruit. In the mouth, raspberry and cherry flavors are forward and tight, propelled by generous acids and ample tannins. Ultimately kind of tart, hard and basic.

The nose is charred and mildly funky. Even with time to air out it’s still very oaky. The palate, meanwhile, is a bit bland despite the fact that it’s packed with the flavor of wild berries. The finish is drying due to heavy tannins, and while it delivers a punch, there aren’t any of the balancing nuances that could potentially make it more pleasing. —M.S.

You had better be prepared for a blast of aromatic oak or this will disappoint. It’s very woody, so much so that it smells of popcorn. Beneath the heavy veneer of wood is an intense, berry-packed palate. As might be expected, the finish is all vanilla and burnt nuts. Over time the stomping oak should calm down some, but probably never enough to become fully integrated. —M.S.
