Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The solid dark cherry fruit here bears a heavy mantle of oak, but the fruit core is dense and can handle it. Black cherry, plum, licorice and toast work well on the full palate. Finishes tart and dry with good length and firm tannins. The oak works better here than in many examples. Drink now through 2004.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The label reads Chianti, but this is more about deep, driving black fruit than typically racy Sangiovese. It kicks off with the purest scent of smashed berries, and then offers up a supercharged black-cherry-laden palate with far more hedonistic weight than starching acids. The wine finishes with power and warmth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Potent up front, with aromas of Boston baked beans, dry red fruit, leather and charcoal. Medium in the mouth, with cherry and plum floating on a classic structure of bright acids and robust tannins. Finishes lithe and fresh, with a shot of tomato and leather.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Leather, earth and dried red fruits comprise a classic nose, while the meaty palate is both heavy and loaded with plum and raspberry. Quite chewy, with firm tannins, extract and chocolaty accents. Mainstream qualities give it mass appeal.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft and food-friendly with lively notes of wild berry, anise, almond and cola, this is exactly the kind of wine to serve at informal meals. The mouthfeel is cleansing and bright yet there is enough structure and acidity to stand up to meat or cheesy pasta.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This modern vineyard-designate Riserva offers toasted notes of spice, nut and crème caramel. There are fruit notes in there too that are surrounded by mineral and earthy shadings. The mouthfeel is gritty, firm and persistent.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a supple, medium-weight wine filled with the flavors of Chianti: cherries, earth and tobacco. If the tannins are suppler than most and the fruit a shade darker and riper, it’s probably because of the heat of this vintage, but the wine retains a crisply acidic bite on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Combines tobacco and earth aromas and flavors in a smooth, supple package. Black cherry fruit dominates the midpalate, while firm acids, tannins and iron-like minerality grab the finish. Try again in two years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A blend of 60% Sangiovese, with the balance split evenly between Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this is a smoky, meaty wine that’s balanced by bright, red raspberry fruit. Tobacco notes take over on the long finish. Supple enough to drink now.

A lush, medium-weight wine that shows some barrique influence in its aromas of vanilla, tobacco, smoke and bacon. Soft and chewy on the finish, this is approachable now, but should be more food-friendly in a year or two.
