Here’s another good value red from Borsao. It’s about as potent and packed a wine as you’ll find for $7, and while it’s jumpy, young and aggressive, it’s also full of jammy black fruit, sticky extraction and firm tannins. A classic mouthfiller with spunk, color and heft.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Already past its prime, this Garnacha-based rosado has sweet nectarine aromas along with a sugary, creamy palate. If it had more zest upon release, that’s mostly gone at this stage. Wait for the 2006.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Warm, crusty and attractive up front, with a ripe blend of plum, raspberry and pepper flavors. Seems plush and focused for such an inexpensive wine, yet it’s also a little bit juicy and wild. Made in the fresh style that Borsao excels at. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For several years running this Garnacha from the Borsao winery has been popular among those seeking size, balance and affordability. The 2004 is a bit oaky and modern, but with its bacon, leather and dark-berry aromas and flavors it’ll win you over. Lush enough but with good spine.

Stylistically speaking, this oak-aged wine is very different from all of Borsao’s fruit-first Garnachas. And that isn’t exactly a full-out compliment. So while the wine has balance and structure, the oak seems dominant on the nose and palate, which lends more vanilla and cream than spice and character.

Every now and then a knockout wine comes along that doesn’t cost a fortune, like this star. Full, ripe fruit and deftly used oak team up to provide an inviting nose and compelling palate. The strength and depth of the fruit is impressive—it just continues to open and shine, as opposed to being embalmed in oak. Keeps you wanting more, right through the satisfying finish. Buy this model of affordable excellence by the case. You could hold this through 2005—but I bet you won’t. Editors’ Choice. —M.M.

On the spot and sweet, with black cherry and roundness on the nose. Plays above its price league via ripe plum and berry flavors, bounce, body and build. Whole, concentrated and shows good structure, depth and character. About as good as inexpensive Garnacha gets.

Tres Picos, or Three Peaks, ranks as a go-to wine for fans of round, smooth, slightly oaky reds. The bouquet is all mocha and smoky/oaky richness, while the sticky, rich palate deals blackberry and chewy, rooty medicinality. Oaky and spicy late, with licorice and warmth. The best thing is that it’s not heavy or overextracted despite being youthful and modern in style.

A steal for six bucks; the nose is floral and black, but under control. Meanwhile, the palate is bouncy, round and balanced, with juicy black plum and wild berry flavors. Clean and solid.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Borsao brand is a bargain pioneer, and while the wines aren’t $4.99 anymore they are still squarely “value” oriented. This rosé is fairly steely and fresh, with pithy grapefruit and nectarine flavors. Lean and peppery on the finish, and ready to be consumed right away.
