Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A big, smoky mass of a wine with hickory aromas, medicinal notes and berry fruit in spades. Feels a little clampy, tannic and hard, but there’s no arguing with the ripe cassis, berry and mocha flavors. Vanilla and coconut on the finish close the show. Tight and solid overall.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From what may be Chile’s trickiest grape to get just right, this is an admirable offering. Some of the variety’s tomato leaf and herb notes are evident, but there’s also plenty of plum and blackberry fruit to provide balance. Medium-bodied, framed by slightly rustic tannins on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Supple and round, this is an easy-drinking Merlot with defined varietal character. It’s slightly herbal on the nose, then adds mocha notes to the black cherry and plum flavors that turn a bit crisp.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A clean, crisp Sauvignon Blanc that won’t break the bank, combining bright gooseberry and passion fruit notes in a reasonable facsimile of the Marlborough style. Plump and fruity on the midpalate, then turns crisp on the relatively short finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rather hard and baked on the nose, with a heavy helping of char and molasses. The palate is angular and tannic, while the flavors revolve around lemony oak and spice more than fruit. Spiky on the finish and sharp-edged as a whole. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Malbec and Syrah.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Grassy and sweet to start, and it never gets darker or more precise. The palate is o.k. but scattershot in how it delivers candied raspberry and black cherry amid heat and tannin. Kind of aggressive in the final analysis.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cedary and slightly herbal, but backed by ample cassis fruit, Botalcura’s top Cabernet boasts a silky-smooth texture and nicely balanced acidity—its main drawback is its limited length on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A slight, sharp wine with hints of vinegar and bramble on the nose and then skinny cherry and cranberry flavors. Too much bite and acid and not nearly enough depth, richness or fun.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good Cab, maybe a touch herbal and light, but very solid. Early aromas of cola, leather and blackberry show some herbal, green notes. But the tomato leaf character is not dominant or unappealing, thus in the end this displays classic Chilean Cabernet qualities on a light, agile frame. Drink now.

Never really gets off the starting blocks. Challenged aromas with generic, hot cherry flavors doesn’t amount to much these days. Shows both berry tartness and weight.
