A bit thorny on the initial impact; notes of apple cider, prunes, dried currant, chocolate, almond and black pepper chime in harmoniously. There’s a sour note on the finish but otherwise it’s a perfect everyday dinner wine.

Murky sulfur notes are a distraction, especially at the beginning, but soften later to reveal cherry and chocolate aromas. This 60-40 Aglianico and Montepulciano blend is characterized by a firm, creamy mouthfeel with smoke (24 months in oak) and some sourness on the close.

From the Gravina appellation in Puglia (southern Italy), this charming blend of Greco (60%) and Malvasia (40%) opens with easy aromas of pear, Golden Delicious apple and drying mineral or talc powder. It’s tonic and fresh in the mouth and would pair with tomato bruschetta and fresh basil.

Poggio al Bosco represents a new school in Italian winemaking, that of the ageworthy white wine from the deep south of the nation. From the 2008 vintage, this wine opens with aromas of apricot, candied fruit, almond and butterscotch.

The label says “Apulian Zinfandel” for American enthusiasts who don’t know that Primitivo is Zin’s cousin. Though a good quaffer, this bears little resemblance to big West Coast-style Zins. Black berry fruit comes through, albeit with little intensity, on the nose. Black plum and chalky, gritty tannins in the mouth lead to more plum-skin flavors, plus a metallic streak, on the finish.

Toasted walnuts, almond paste and dried fruit merge nicely, leaving a velvety smooth trail in the mouth. This wine is a powerhouse despite the higher sugar content, which should soften the effects of 15% alcohol.

Named for the town in Apulia from which it comes, this wine mixes Greco di Tufo and Malvasia. Apple, pear, cinnamon and floral elements combine on the nose. On the palate, there is solid weight, tangy acidity and a velvety texture. The finish persists with apple and cinnamon presiding. Would go well with shellfish. Best Buy.

This luminous blend of Greco and Malvasia opens with a fragrant bouquet of white flowers, peach blossom, citrus, lemon rind and almond blossom. The wine is compact and streamlined with a bright crisp finale.

A 60% Greco and 40% Malvasia blend from a surreal part of Puglia with long horizons and whole towns buried within deep ravines. Offers some buttery popcorn and peach and lots of yellow floral tones, like acacia. Nice tart finish. Imported by Winebow.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This 60-40 Greco and Malvasia blend is among the most representative quality white wines from the Puglia region. Aromas of pear, stone fruit and white mineral are backed by creamy warm-climate nuances and a thick consistency. The wine is not oak fermented or aged although it tastes as if it had been. Botromagno was founded in 1991 by the D’Agostino family, following a long history as a cooperative winery.
