Powerful, spicy and rich nose but at the same time strangely reticent in pulling one in, the aromas seem to flit over the surface; the body of the wine is sweet and intense with honeyed fruit and good grip; there is a high acid content in this wine that makes it a bit hard in the middle of the mouth, but a classy wine; spicy and peppery at the finish with a rich texture that suggests lots of glycerin in the wine; good if not great. An unfortunate comparison to the Vogue above, this wine has crude and sweet aromas that smell manufactured with a plastic and medicinal character, and the heavy-handed sweetness of a badly chapitalized wine; sweet and flat in the mouth with harsh citric flavors that are unbalanced and tough; hard to reconcile this wine with the Vogue as being from the same appellation. Sweet cherry nose, earthen, coarse with slight touch of acidity and some barnyardy elements; first taste is sweet, then becoming more earthen and woody in the mouth; dry, grainy tannins, a bit coarse and rough but with good basic structure; not really ready yet, but I’m not sure that it’s going to get much better; nice with rich foods. Good nose with dominant aromas that are chalky and minerally, and quite dry, but at the same time there is good fruit that yields up some sweetness and ripeness; light and surprisingly flat in the mouth, and if it had stayed this way it would have been a disappointment, but the wine opened up in the mouth to reveal more richness and ripe fruit; a long finish with sweet fruit and quite a bit of density; good if not great. Sweet nose with ripe fruit, cookie dough and mineral scents, lots of minerals on the nose but also quite light and with a lemon juice quality to the aromas; first taste is surprisingly sweet and rich; there is a character of egg custard in this wine mixed with the same cookie dough sweetness; soft in the mouth but with an emerging lemon peel flavor that tightens up the finish; balanced and elegant at the end with layers of flavor. Minerally and tight nose, this wine clearly leaves the impression that it is not ready to drink, opens a bit to reveal smoky and sweet aromas that suggest meyer lemons and lemon drops, later there is an interesting but definite aroma of wood; quite smooth and round in the mouth with spicy lemon flavors; a balanced wine with nicely layered flavors; quite tight in the mouth though, and clearly can use more time to reveal what lies beneath the surface. Ripe nose of lemon peel and minerals, lots of earthen scents, steely and dry while at the same time showing elements of richness; lemony and a bit dry on the palate; surprisingly thin in the middle of the mouth, slightly hollow; there is fruit, but it is not well developed, mostly green apples; finish is somewhat short and a bit thin and reedy with herbs and citrus acidity but a lack of integration. Wonderful, classic nose, strong presence of sauerkraut, but at the same time sweet and ripe, spicy aromas; rich ripe and sweet in the mouth at the front of the palate; at first there was a heavy attack of citrus-laden acidity in this wine, but as it sat in the glass, the wine achieved a beautiful balance of roundness and sweetness, without giving up its character; a long finish, quite spicy but wonderfully seductive in the mouth. Austere nose, lots of minerals, slightly dusty, bitter lemons, touch of smoke, very elegant and refined; sweet at the front of the mouth with sweet lemons and lemon peel flavors; turning quite dry in the mid-mouth with an almost chalky character; not unpleasant though, and the dryness is offset with a slight touch of honey that saves the wine from becoming too austere; lingering flavors on the palate keep the wine around at the finish for a long complete ending; will appeal to those who like the more austere and reluctant style. Sweet and buttery nose, soft aromas of butterscotch and honey, pretty obvious oxidation here though that gives the nose an old, “dishwatery” character; soft flavors in the mouth; not too much character here and pretty faded now; still has some nice butterscotch flavors though, and quite a bit of acidity at the core, but not much elegance of balance left here, if there ever was any. (15.5/20)
