Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Colored a deep green/gold, this thick and viscous Chardonnay is packed with flavors of peach, apricot and tropical stone fruits. It seems Australian in its weight and fruit power, though the acids typical of Washington grapes give it some additional lift. There’s just enough oak to provide a nice dusting of spice. Definitely a wine to drink young.

A big-boned, rich 100% Merlot, this is a dark and chewy wine whose cherry fruit is set amidst an explosion of hickory smoke, dark chocolate, and tar. The tannins—quite astringent and drying—suggest a long cellar life ahead. Drink it now or lay it down for up to a decade.

Tight when first opened, with polished fruit flavors of blackberry and cassis, mingling with barrel accents of anise and clove. The alcohol, listed at 13.5%, does not indicate the weight and power of the wine. One caveat—there is a chalky aftertaste from the combination of very dry tannins and citrusy acids.

Sourced from the Wallula vineyard, this pure Syrah opens with a pretty, floral top note over flavors of purple berries. Hints of dried herb and lavender bring complexity into the lightly chocolaty finish.

Winemaker Rob Newsom has defined a Chardonnay style that pushes the grape to its ripening limits. Straw gold and bursting with ultraripe scents and flavors, it’s a jumble of apples, orange marmalade, and lemon candy. A buttery finish brings olive oil, caramel and butterscotch.

Just a single barrel was made, pure Sangiovese from the Candy Mountain Vineyard. Tight, tart and dark, it captures black cherry fruit with black licorice and a whiff of smoke. At this point in time the tannins and acids seem to be fighting it out for control.

This new winery, with excellent grape sources, jumps in with a soft, plush, buttery Chardonnay. Substantial flavors of ripe tropical fruits—bananas, peaches and melon—are melded to buttered nuts and toast.

Seven Hills (Walla Walla) fruit, with an edgy, slightly herbal, tannic structure. The fruit is a mix of red berries, and there is lots of mixed clove and cinnamon spice from the barrels. It’s nicely blended, and layered, though probably not for the long haul. Just 80 cases were made.

In attempting to reach for just a bit of extra flavor the wine has gone slightly over the top, but offers many near-term pleasures. A plush mix of stewed fruits, sweet plum and mince pie smoothes into a seductive, lush middle before hitting a wall of tannin on the way out.

This very ripe, slightly stewed wine runs right at you with full-out fruit flavors, soft and open. Soft at first, it turns tannic in the back end and finishes with somewhat cooked flavors and plenty of toasty new oak.
