With its blast of briary, brambly wild berries and black pepper, this is a classic Zin. The lusty flavors range through blackberries and cherries and mulberries to cola and root beer. Despite the hefty tannins, it’s ready now with grilled meats or pasta with tomato sauce.

Similar to past bottlings, Bourassa’s 2005 Syrah is slightly rustic. It has a baked-fruit quality of blackberry and black cherry pie filling, and is very peppery. Given the right fare, such as a pepper steak, it could work some magic.

It may be that this wine needs time in the cellar, but right now, it’s tough and tannic. There are some fine blackberry, cassis, spicy plum and cedar flavors, and it could blossom after 2008 for a few years.

A good Cabernet for drinking now, with polished tannins and candied flavors of blackberry pie filling, sour black cherry Lifesavers and sweet, smoky sandalwood.

A fine young Petite Sirah, although it needs some time to mature. Even at the age of nearly 4 years, it shows fresh, jammy flavors of crushed blackberries and cherries, like it just came out of the fermenter. But it’s balanced. Better after 2012.

Quite an interesting wine that shows the hallmarks of a fine Napa Cab, but is a bit lighter in body, and more cherried. Dry and velvety, with smooth tannins, it will play well against a grilled steak with mushroom sauce.

This is a light-bodied wine with pretty cherry and herb flavors. It’s totally dry, but has some rugged tannins. Best with a juicy steak or lamb.

Rich and packed with superripe fruit: blackberries, raspberries and plums all make appearances. Add on layers of coffee, caramel and toast notes from new oak and the result is a flashy, hedonistic wine that just lacks the complexity and structure to take it to the next level.

Soft and sweetly fruity, with pie-filling flavors of blackberries, plums and cherries, spiced with anise and cinnamon. Easy to like. Drink now.

Very sweet but a bit thin on fruity flavor despite some chocolate and raspberry. This Port-style wine is a blend of Primitivo, Zinfandel and Syrah.
