The sour-plum nose sports cedar, leather and clove accents. Round, even juicy on the palate, it displays a strong, tart cranberry-like element and pepper and oak shadings. Finishes bright, with tart fruit, herbs and leather. Earthy, juicy, a bit herbal, and definitely Syrah. Drink now through 2005.

Roasted cherry fruit here is light and overridden by gamy brett and metallic notes. The unyielding horsey element will be hard for most people to get past. It has character, but many tasters found the aromas difficult. A retaste confirmed the panel’s initial findings.

A rich, 100% varietal in which warm sunshine coaxed out ripe notes of figs and white peach, while the region’s cool temperatures capture Sauvignon’s minty, anise-infused side. The resulting wine is complex and dynamic. High acidity gives this very dry wine a nice bite of tartness.

Leathery notes and a whole panoply of herbs and spices—cinnamon, pepper, lavender and fennel—make for a lovely bouquet. In the mouth, however, the wine is not quite as impressive, yielding up tart cherry flavors and a lean mouthfeel. Finishes on dry, herbal notes.

Very bright and acidic, with the savory taste of a sour lemondrop candy. If you’re sensitive to acidity you’ll find it tart. But it’s deliciously layered, with tiers of buttered toast, vanilla and spice.

An elegant, lighter-style Pinot that oozes charm and finesse, from its vanilla-bean and cola aromas through the sweet root-vegetable and sour cherry flavors. Finishes well, with pretty herbal and fruit nuances that reverberate for a long time.

This light Pinot offers an elegant nose with tart cherry and leathery, earthy accents. It opens to a like palate, but the wine has an essentially lean, even sharp character, with rather high acidity for the thin fruit. Solid winemaking keeps the Pinot Noir character correct here, but the vintage's fruit essentially lacks the desired depth or ripeness.

You want brawny and brambly and briary? Take this Zin. With wildly mouthfilling berry, raisin, cranberry, coffee and peppery spice flavors, it finishes dry and clean. The alcohol is high, but in this case, it’s exactly what a wine of this power requires.

This is a bit riper and sweeter than the Edna Ranch bottling, and certainly less tannic. Blackberry, cherry liqueur and black raspberry flavors are accessible and sweet. It is, however, a rustic wine, with jagged tannins, while high acidity gives the finish a peppery, hot burn.
