You can feel the unctuous, oily richness as soon as this wine reaches the tongue. It is dense and concentrated, with sweet green plums and a creamy texture. The old-vine fruit, enveloping the mouth, just leaves a hint of spice.

Enormously complex, with aromas and flavors that run the gamut from oil shale and beeswax to quince and Asian pear, baking spices and honey. Finishes long and spicy, with a dry mineral component. —J.C.

At first the aromas bursting forth are warm and inviting, turning harder and sterner with air, finally becoming almost crystalline in their apple and pear character. Flavors of honey and clove, with a long, dry talc-like finish. —J.C.

The Heiligenstein vineyard is a great one, and from this Willi Bründlmayer produces three great wines. Of the three, this is the most accessible when young, already a complete wine, with minerality and also warmth from the very ripe, rounded fruits, just edged with crispness.

One of Bründlmayer’s specialities is the lyre training system, which opens out the canopy to get the maximum exposure. It gives a wine that has extra intensity, flavors of white currants vying with lychees, almonds, a perfumed aura. The end is satisfying, with acidity adding a lift.

An elegant Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) that has fresh, juicy fruit, some warmth of spices and almonds, but mainly great purity of red cherry flavors. Tannins give a good shape to this attractive wine.

The Lamm vineyard, next door to the Riesling vineyard of Heiligenstein, produces powerful Grüners, and this 2008 is a fine example. It is opulent without being overpowering, the white currants and pears layered with acidity to give balance and texture. As with other great Bründlmayers, this needs aging. Imported by Michael Skurnik Wines.

A firmly tannic, young Pinot Noir with red berry fruits under this strong surface dryness. As it develops over the next year, it will become a more elegant, balanced wine, but never one with great power. Cécile is Willi Bründlmayer’s daughter.
