This is the kind of Chardonnay that divides wine lovers into enemy camps. Old World purists will criticize the candied richness. New World fans will love the toasted marshmallow, caramel corn and buttered toast flavors that rest on a solid foundation of pineapple and green apple fruit.

Sweet and jammy in blackberry, cherry and cola flavors, with a rich coating of oak, and soft, generous tannins. It’s a glamorous Cabernet, not one for the cellar, but to drink now.

Soft and plush, with smooth tannins supporting layers of coffee, currant, chocolate, plum, toast and tar flavors. Spicy notes add interest to the blend, which finishes a little on the short side. Nonetheless, quite juicy.

A very nice Cabernet that pleases now for its rich array of blackberry, cherry and oak flavors. It’s smooth and soft and a little sweet in the finish, like the aftertaste of a berry tart.

This is a field blend that includes about 5% Petite Sirah. Classic flavors of black cherry, pie cherry and blackberry, balanced acids, soft tannins, and some peppery spice. There’s a whiff of earth or barnyard, just enough to add interest.

Turning old, tired and funky, with dried leaf flavors and a tart, rasping finish. This Chard is just too old.

A really wonderful Cabernet, clearly grown well and well made. It has that plush, rich feeling you want in a Cabernet Sauvignon, with deliciously ripe blackberry, black currant, cassis and dark chocolate flavors. Terrific now, and should age for 4–6 years, if not longer.

Pretty good price for a Napa Cabernet as elegant as this. It’s a polished wine for drinking now. Shows smooth, refined tannins, with interesting flavors of blackberries, red plums, red currants, tobacco and dusty spices. Easy to find, with 15,000 cases produced.

A tight, flinty Chard whose green apple and lime flavors are accompanied by mineral, slate and chalky notes. Feels streamlined in the mouth despite elaborate oak. The finish is short and spicy. —S.H.
