Great structure here, with super-velvety tannins and firm acids. Feels clean in the mouth, with subtle oak. The flavors suggest blackberries, with a strong overlay of pepper and sage. Cool climate winegrowing has produced a wine that straddles the line between ripe and green. —S.H.

Ripe and rich, but rather heavy and softly sweet, this wine lacks the vibrancy and elegance you want in a fine Pinot Noir, especially at this price. It’s a decent everyday wine, with cola, rhubarb pie and cherry flavors.

Too dark in color and heavy in texture for a rosé, with a weight that’s almost Rhône-like. But on the other hand, it’s dry and clean, with pretty cherry and raspberry flavors. Good with roast salmon.

As sweet as a dessert pastry, with white sugared orange marmalade, pineapple crême brulée and vanilla cream flavors. Crisp acidity provides needed balance. Nice, if you like your white wines this sweet.

Made in the modern style of ripe fruit and elaborate oak, this rich, creamy Chardonnay features pineapple jam, peach pie and toasty vanilla flavors. It’s a bit obvious, but lipsmackingly delicious.

Lovely tastes of currants and berries are framed in intricate tannins. It’s not a blockbuster, but a lovely, limpid, supple wine, perfect for tonight and near-term consumption.

Big, rich and sturdy, this wine nicely showcases the depth of Merlot’s stone-fruit and berry flavors, while the tannins are soft and pretty. Not that it’s a slouch. There’s a tough backbone of acids and good structure. The finish is rich and interesting.
