Bulletin Place is normally a pretty reliable value brand, so this year’s Shiraz has to be viewed as a bit of a disappointment. There’s just not enough intensity to the wine’s vaguely berryish aromas and flavors before a gritty, coffee-grounds note comes in on the finish.

A classic Shiraz nose of plum pudding and rubber leads to a medium-weight palate that’s got a bit of depth to it, with undertones of humus and fall leaves. Fresh black fruit pops up briefly on the short, crisp finish. Drink up.

Crisp and refreshing in the mouth, with a light resin or fig note that is also detectable on the nose. Mellow yellow fruit rounds out the finish. This is one of Len Evans’s wines, named for a restaurant he used to own.

The nose is a bit medicinal with cedar and leather. There is a lack of fruit and a thin, hollow mouthfeel that finishes soft.

Wide, juicy plum fruit on the palate is no surprise, given the fat plum and blueberry notes that waft from the glass. It drops off a little sooner than I’d want on the finish, but it’s still a good Cab pick at an attractive price.

A tannic but friendly quaffer that improves with time in the glass. The cured meat and tobacco notes don’t exactly connect with the sweet-tart fruit. Unlike all the black-fruit-driven Shirazes, this one is basically cherries and plums. The finish is fresh and short, and here the tannins really show their teeth.

Starts off a bit brambly and herbal, but the fruit is spicy and fresh, showing some supple tannins on the midpalate. Cherry flavors pick up a minty herbaceousness on the finish that would make this wine work well with lamb. Drink now.
