Just gorgeous. Floods the mouth with decadent black currant, cherry, chocolate, anise, beef jerky and smoky oak flavors that stun for their addictive deliciousness. Yet it’s perfectly dry, and the balance of rich, ripe tannins, acidity and smoky oak is near perfect. The wine is a blend of Bordeaux varieties and Syrah, from esteemed vineyards including Hyde, Stagecoach and Caldwell.

Very rich and luxurious, with the smooth tannins Napa so effortlessly provides. Explodes in succulent blackberry and cherry pie filling, cherry-chocolate truffle and smoky oak flavors. Turns a little too sweet and candied through the finish.

Quite a fine Syrah. It’s ripe and almost sweet in jammy blackberries, cherries, chocolate, smoky oak and peppery spices, but is given depth and drama by the fine structure of tannins. Feels plush in the mouth. Could develop through 2012.

This is very full-bodied and tannic, with a dusty astringency that’s too young to drink now, but it should age well. Balanced and dry, it has an impressively ripe core of cassis, spicy plums and cherry liqueur that should sweeten when those tannins fall out. Best after 2010.

Last year, Buoncristiani released their 2004 Claret, and it got 92 points. This wine, which costs more than twice as much, is better. It’s very rich, with softly elegant acids and tannins that frame extraordinarily rich currant, plum, chocolate, anise and black pepper flavors. Hard to tell if it’s an ager, but it’s totally delicious now and will be for at least several years.

Tannins weigh this Syrah down, making it toughly astringent, a wine that makes your mouth pucker. Through all that, you can taste the massive flavors of black currants, red licorice, violets, cloves and peppery grilled veal that are pure, dry and profound. Is it an ager? The pedigree suggests yes. The wine is a blend of the Caldwell, Stagecoach and Hyde-Oak Knoll vineyards. Stash it through mid-2009, if not longer.

Surprisingly tannic, considerably more so than the wonderful ’05. There’s a sting of astringency that shuts down the palate and emphasizes the dryness. Underneath are the blackberries, black currants and grilled meat of a fine red wine. The blend is Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Malbec. Now–2012.
